Is there any tools that let you zoom in while playing game? For example if I am running 1600 x 1200, I press the zoom key, the 800 x 600 pixels in the middle will be enlarged by 4 times and displayed

I know that are some "magnifying glass" tools that works on desktop, but I need one that can work with games...

I have a high res LCD (2560x1600) but I need to sit quite far away from it. Most of the time I can see it just fine but when I need to spot some tiny detail on screen I will be in trouble. Yes I can use lower res but it just won't do justice to this LCD.

i know exactly what you mean.
the one used in mechwarrior 3 is the best example of somhing like that.

ahem.. not all of us have 27 inc lcds ..ahem

Sounds like game developers would consider that a cheat, i think you just need to sit closer or get a bigger monitor.

in quake3 the zoom/scope button merely changed teh FOV.

perhaps you can go into teh config and bind a key to change your FOV from stock to something closer in

It can't be considered a cheat, I can achieve the same result if I can sit closer. The problem is I can't do that, so I need this function.

It sounds like it would be frowned upon by developers and the like to me, too. Something like that would definitely give you an advantage over players. I know some of the same result can be achieved by sitter closer, but it's not really the same ordeal.

don't argue about cheat here :) I just wanna know if there exist some tools like this.

Fool around with fov commands in the console...at the very least I think (with HL2 and other source games) you can bind a key to FOV like someone mentioned and then bind another key to the default FOV you are playing at...so you hit one button to zoom in and one button to zoom out.

In regards to cheating, I don't think it is, simply because you lose most of your peripheral vision. Try 'zooming' in in Counter Strike on a server with decent players. You'd be lucky to snag two kills before you are knifed, or at least shot from behind.
