Hey,

I'm looking for an instant messaging program to use on my home network. I've searched, but can't seem to find anything quite like I want.

I would prefer that the program not need to access the internet to be functional, but if necessary, that would be ok.

Also, i don't want to use ICQ, AIM, Trillian....

Any suggestions?

http://www.jabber.org/

an open, secure, ad-free alternative to consumer IM services like AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo

Decentralized -- the architecture of the Jabber network is similar to email; as a result, anyone can run their own Jabber server, enabling individuals and organizations to take control of their IM experience.

Maybe NetSend? http://www.fomine.com/netsend.html
It is for your LAN only, and doesn't leave home. :)
Thats not an interactive messaging service in the sense he's looking for - including features such as convenience, account-based model, familiar chat interface, conversational feel, and history.

He didn't say that. He didn't say exactly how many of the more traditional IM features he wants. That's why I linked it. It's called having choices.

Thanks for the suggestions so far...

Ok, I only want to IM between 2, possibly 3 computers in my home, all in diff parts of the house. I would like a GUI interface, like AIM, otherwise the rest of the family won't use it. Netsend would work, but it's not "pretty enough."

I also want it interactive, like AIM.

I know, "Why don't you just use AIM?" because I hate it.
