It's really been bothering me latley. You know the handles on really old iron pots, the one's that have that spiral handels and no matter how hot the pot gets the handel is always cool to the touch... well why not make a Copper block and weld both ends of the spiral to the block... wouldn't that dissipate the heat almost instantly? it seems simple and practical, why hasn't anyone done this? can it be done? Did I just give away a great idea to the public that I will never see a dime of??
 
You mean like handles on the door of a wood stove? They are desinged not to conduct heat. If the handles were made out of something that would keep a CPU cool, you would have a spiral pattern melted onto your hand each time you grabbed the pot or the wood stove door.

Plus you need a lot of surface area for air cooling. Spiraly twangy things dont cut it on todays CPUs.
 
The designs of todays heatsinks are reaching almost perfect dissipation for size/weight/noise ratio. If something like that'd work, it'd already be in use.

A similar thing to what your suggesting, but on a smaller mega scale are the Swiftech heatsinks that use a heliod spiral shaped aluminium pin to create greater surface area and allow for better heat disspiation, but they slowly slipping away against the super heatsinks (XP-90, XP-120, SP-94, 7700) etc.
