Installing windowsxp from sata (Asus A8V) Please help

I have a Maxtor 250gb SATA drive connected by the SATA cable to the MB. It's powered by a converted (Ive tried standard power connection also).

When the install gets to read the HD, windows says "cannot find a hard driver" . I've tried F6 with a flloppy, usingf promise SATA drivers from the net, and my Asus CD, it loads them, but still, always, says HD not found.

When I boot my machine , the Maxtor is detected, so I know the drive must b e ok right?

Ive tried loads of configurations in BIOS

Please, if you guys could help me out, Id seriously appreciate it.

It sounds like you doing it correctly.. boot from the windows cd hit f6 and load the drivers from the floppy and then sit back
 
no it shouldnt...Are there any other error messages that show when the bios is booting <before you get to the boot from cd option?
 
yeah, theres one thing, the promise bios comes up saying its not installed? takes ages then this happens
 
I had that same error on my msi board but my system would just go right past it. Since I never fixed it on mine because it never caused a problem I dont know how to help you past that part it may or may not be the problem. Have you installed all of the drivers from the disks. The first time I installed I hit f6 and put the floppy in and hit install on the first xp driver listed, what I didnt see was that there were a few others that I could scroll down to and also install.. Have you looked there?
 
well it was worth a shot. My promise disk had 2 different ones on it both labeled for xp but if I hadn't of scrolled I never would have seen the 2nd. Have you tried moving the sata connector to a different sata port or tried another cable or reseating it?
 
I'm in the very same boat, except I'm using a Western Digital 160 GB and/or a Maxtor 120 GB. I have tried installing the drivers after hitting F6, the drivers appear to install properly, then the system hangs up (gets to Windows is Starting and stays there) or goes BSOD. I still haven't solved this problem, but if I turn anything up I'll let you know. On a similar note, what are the signs that you have a faulty ICH6 bridge on the Intel 925 chipset?
 
You might want to check your board and see if there are any bios jumpers to enable your SATA drive to be active. Plus check your boot settings, and set your boot drive to SCSI. Because not all boards have settings for SATA, so you have to trick it with SCSI.
 
I'm having the same problem. :( I've tried everything. There are no jumpers I have to activate and I'm sure my motherboard supports SATA hardrives. (It detects the hd in the bios. I'm so confused and I really want to use my new computer. Someone plz help. :(

Mine detected the HD but I still had to make the change to SCSI for it to work right.
 
When you go into the boot sequence of your drives, you want to just change it so your primary bootable drive is the HD (SCSI)

In your bios of course.
 
Well when I set it to boot off of my hardrive first, it boots and just stays at a black screen with that blinking white line.
 
Right but do you have it set has Hard Drive 0 or something like that?
Because most of the time that only thinks to check IDE channels. Not SATA so that's why it needs to be changed to SCSI
 
Well what I did before was put the VIA VT6420 1st HDD to the first boot device. What else should I do? How do I change it to SCSI? Sorry I'm a newbie.
 
same problem here. I had both Seagate drives both cables and both power cables working less then 20 minutes ago. I then put my ASUS board in hooked everything to the 2 promise ports (red SATA) and booted. Durring boot up you get "Hit CTR + F" to configure Promise RAID. I configured it as a STRIPE 64 k 2 drives and it see's it as one big drive as 240 gigs. I then proceed to boot from my XP cd i hit F6 when it asks and load the "WIN XP PROMISE driver" off of floppy drive A. It then gets to windows and when it gets there it says it found 2 hard drives (should only show one) and says Unknown drive for both of them. I cant figure this out, probably gonna go back to the via's like i did when i had this board many months ago....
 
Dont know if this will help anyone but i just got done going back to ASUS's website for VIA SATA driver's and I noticed that there seems to be 3 sets of non beta PROMISE drivers for the A8V. I dont know what the hell the difference is, and at this point dont really give a crap, but might help to try the other set other then the one's you downloaded.
