Ok, I've tried a number of things on this system to get Windows XP to install, but no go.

Here's what I have...

Software :
Windows XP Pro SP1

Hardware :

Amd Sempron 2400+
2X256MB PC-3200
Seagate 10.0 GB HDD
IBM 60 GXP 41.0 GB HDD
Floppy
CD-Rom
CD-RW
Asus A7N8X Mobo with latest Bios update
Radeon 9800 SE
PCI Modem from old HP Comp.
400W PSU

Now, it crashes everytime at the exact same place (ironicaly, it's the screen that says "Your computer will now be faster and more reliable"). Now, I tried the following, swapping ram from single channel, to dual channel, to one stick, to the other stick, to the stick in my other comp, tried swapping harddrives, cd-roms, tried upplugging everything cept for 1 CD-Rom, 1 HDD and vidcard. Tried with the old BIOS, the new updated one, tried different Bios configurations from bios defaults to fully tweaked manual settings. Tried deactivating everything that could be deactivated. I'm kinda at the end of my road now. I'm down to the CPU and the MOBO as far as I can tell...

Anyone have any recommendations now ?

this always boils down to the same things

HDD bad sector - have to run HDD manuf test utility
Bad ram
Bad CD writer (try diff optical - I know it sounds crazy)
Scratched or blemished CD - even a greasy fingerprint on top
CPU overheat, or not set to correct GHz in bios

Try safe mode
Try formatting O/S partition with win 98 boot disk first (old trick)
Slave it to another drive, install, then reset jumper and make it master again

When I was installing winxp sp1 a few weeks ago, I was having the same problem

I had a CDRW and CD/DVD ROM plugged in to my computer. I tried both of them, it didn't work. I unplugged the CD/DVD ROM and it worked!

I suggest playing around with that for a while. ;)
