My father is running an older version of windows that was preinstalled on his netbook. He is looking to upgrade to Win7 but I'm wondering how to do this. His netbook does not have an optical drive. My guess is that I could install an upgrade copy online but will that wipe all data or just copy over? If I install Win7 to his netbook, I'm looking to wipe it all and start fresh.

You can clean install from USB, but, being a netbook, even if you upgrade it to 2GB of ram, dont expect it to work better than it does on XP, regardless of ppl misinformation.

I have an ASUS Eee netbook, 1000H I think.
Came with a partitioned 160 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM.

I upgraded to 2GB of RAM and erased the HDD, creating a single 160 GB HDD.

I have a USB Optical drive, installed it and then installed W7 32bit OS (upgrade disc) with absolutely no problems.
the OS runs flawlesly and it very snappy. Looks and functions way better than XP.

Its a breeze.:D

Does Windows basically copy/paste over to a USB just fine then?

I forgot about the memory issue, I'll have to check it out.

You can install via USB disk or USB optcail drive.

You can also downloade Windows 7 from here (http://techpp.com/2009/11/11/download-windows-7-iso-official-direct-download-links/) and use the steps below.

No. You need to prep the driver first:

I used a USB DVD drive to install it on my old Dell mini 10v. Flash drives work too.
