Installing Vista with SATA

I know that Vista has the ability to see other options to load drivers on to SATA drives but will I be able to install Vista by having just one SATA DVD Drive or do I have to have a IDE to install it? This is a wierd question but I wasn't sure....

I have the same question. I currently have a new system, and I'm trying to install vista home premium 32 bit on it.

My asus p5b-e has the intel i8chr chipset with 6 sata ports. I currently have 2 320gb sata hds attached to two of those ports. But, I can't install vista to either drive. I downloaded asus' intel matrix storage manager driver and burned it to a cd. Then during vista install, directed it to look for a driver on the cd, but vista keeps saying that it can't find a device driver.

What tha hell? I thought this was going to be pretty straight forward. In the BIOS I have my sata configuration set to ide, the other options are raid and ahpi (or achi?). Do I have to set it to RAID?

Hope someone can help out.

If you can set the SATA to "Legacy IDE" you should have no problems installing, at least with an Intel chipset.

If you require it in RAID mode for some reason, you would have to supply the drivers during the initial install. Vista can accept installation drivers from a variety of sources, not just floppies (like XP and earlier).

Hey Supersubzero, I currently have the Sata controller set to "ide", but still no luck with vista cd recognizing the drives. I click on them during install and try to format them, but I get the message that the hardware is not supported and that I might have to change a bios setting...

I guess I'll look into the bios to make sure that the drives are set to "ide"

Let me know if that works oneils

Do you think it would be a good idea to have a temp IDE drive (around the house) to install vista then put in the SATA once it is installed?

It looks like there are three SATA Configuration settings for p5b-e...

Disable, Compatible, and Enhanced.

Then there are three options for "Configure SATA as." They are: IDE, RAID and AHCI.

I've left SATA Configuration to Enhanced, and

I've left "Configure SATA as" IDE. But, no luck getting vista to install so far. It keeps asking for drivers...

I'm starting to think so.

I'll try dicking around some more. Maybe I'll try the JMICRON SATA ports that are also on the board.

Well, I connected one of the SATA drives to the JMICRON port. When It came time to install windows, I got two drives listed. But I couldn't tell which were attached to the I8CHR and which was attached to the JMICRON port. They were listed as Drive 0 and Drive 1. So, I just clicked on Drive "0" and then clicked on "new."

Vista then set it to "Primary." I didn't bother clicking on "Format" after that, I just clicked on "install." Now Vista seems to be installing.

I'll let you know what happens.

edit, seems kind of weird that its installing without a format...I'm guessing the install will format the drive as one partition...oh well I'm currently at "expending files 75%."

update, now at "completing installation." woohoo! only took about 10 minutes to get to this point.

Strangely, I keep getting an "Intel CPU ucode error" message pop-up everytime the system reboots during installation. I then have to press F1 to continue...

Anyone know what that's all about?

I know you went through a bunch of wierd stuff but did you happen to just put Vista in the DVD drive and run it straight out? Did it see the drive or would it not even read it?

Hey LamiaFusion.

Yeah, I guess it happened like that. I set the system's boot priority to be 1. cd-rom (actually an sata dvd rw), and then 2. as a hd.

I then saved the boot priority and exited the bios. Since I didin't have an os installed my mobo directed me to put in a boot media. I then opened up my drive and popped in the Vista dvd. The vista dvd then did its thing, but that's when the problems started.

The install window recognised both of my sata hds, but I couldn't format them. To be honest I don't know if I could have installed at that point, I was so fixated on formatting that I started to mess around in the BIOS. I set "SATA Configuration" to "Enhanced", and "Configure SATA as" to "IDE."

I also switched one of the drives to the JMICRON controller and enabled that in the BIOS. Then I rebooted and vista install did its thing again. I got a list of two drives, drive 0 and drive 1, I chose drive 0. I don't even know which sata port it is on.

This time I did not try to format, I just:

-Clicked on Drive 0
-Clicked on "New"
-Clicked on "Next"

Then Vista installed. My vista machine is now running. Took a while to figure out how to install motherboard drivers after vista installed. Asus website is shit. And you can't install the drivers (audio and lan) from the asus cd. You have to put the asus cd in your drive, then:

- click on "Computer" with your right mouse button;
- click on "Device Manager" (near top-left)
- click on "continue" (if UAC is on)
- click (with your right mouse button) on the device you want to update (for me it was sound and lan controller).
- click on "Update Software."
- with the motherboard driver cd in the dvd drive, click on "Browse Computer for driver software"
- click on the actual driver you want to install from the cd (if you have an asus board, do not use the "Asus setup" thingamajig for the driver. Instead try to point to the actual driver itself. In my case it was an Attansic Gigabit Lan Controller setup file). If you use the asus setup utitility, it won't work.
- install driver.

So, I'm still kind of confused as to how I got it working. I guess right now I'll just let it be...

Hope this helps.

time for bed......sweepy!

No problem, I hope everything works out for you.

I ended up reinstalling so that I could place Vista on its own partition of my primary drive. The reinstall worked very easily. Maybe, after all that, it was the BIOS settings that prevented me from installing the first time...or my stupidness.

i have all sata drive no problems installining vista . dvd -hard drives ,,no ide ya:p

Worked for me for XP and Vista installs on the P5B deluxe, same shipset.

Enhanced speed mode and IDE(non-raid) settings.

Yeah, in a post just above, I mentioned that I successfully reinstalled with no problems. Used those BIOS settings and had no problems.

I think I was just being stupid. I was probably tired after building the pc...and got confused at those disk management options when they ask you what drive you want to install vista to.

Thanks! I'm enjoying it a lot. Vista is pretty cool. I love the search function...but I haven't quite gotten used to the new file menus and UAC is a major pain.

I'll have the long weekend to get familiarised with it.
