I currently have one WD 250GB SATA hard drive installed in my system (EVGA 680i A1 mobo and Windows Vista) and I want to add another one in RAID 1 for data security.

The question I have is, how do it do it without wiping out the data I currently have on my installed hard drive?

Step-by-step, what do I have to do to get the second drive installed in a RAID 1?

Just wanna make sure I do this right so I don't lose any data. This is my first time messing with RAID. :)

Thanx everyone!

Step by step:

  • Find out whether you need to change the `mode' of the SATA controller
    • if so, find out whether you need a different driver for the RAID-1 mode
    • if so find out whether you can update the driver on a running install
  • backup your data
  • verify the backup's integrity
  • find out whether you can select which HDD has `good' data when using the nvraid
    • if so, select the HDD with the existing data when creating the RAID-1
  • else find out if you can create a degraded array
    • if so, create a degraded array with the new HDD, clone the old one, add the old one.
    • if not create an image of your install on a third HDD, create raid, restore image
