How do you update your bios ?

Will you have to reinstall Windows if you update you bios?

If you switch your processor and nothing else do you have to reinstall windows?

1) Find the website for your board manufacturer. The instructions for bios update and the bios file will be there.

2) No, you won't need to reinstall windows.

3) No

"flashing" is just the generic term used for erasing and subsequently reprogramming the BIOS (usually an EEPROM chip) on the motherboard

thanks Papa-Ming

do you have to "reFlash" you bios

ps what does "reflash" mean

No problem. :)

Your board obviously came with a bios. Now you're going to change it, or, " reflash" it. Just means you're going to change the data kept in the bios memory.

Did you get your info alright? They might move this to another forum since we've moved along to bios. But ask people if you're unsure of how to do this. OK?

OK, I see Matt got that one.

do you do that from windows or the bios screen
Your best bet is to do some reading for yourself. That's the best way to learn something new, like this. Go to the website for your motherboard, and you fill find BIOS files to download. Most come with everything you need to flash, including the instructions. Each board maker does it differently, so you'll have to check into this for yourself.

I don't have the board yet but i was looking at the
MSI 915GM-FR Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 915G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
.

If i want to put a P4 6xx in it i have to have it bios version 1.7 so i was trying to see if i could do it my self

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=606&kind=1

Ok, I see.

I still use a floppy to flash. However, In this Note from MSI it refers to both Live update ( done from your windows desktop ) or the flash utility and bios file ( done from floppy at boot-up )
Lots of folks will tell you that the floppy method is better, like me, but the Live Update is easier. So that might be your option when you get your board. OK? ;)

"The BIOS contained here are exclusively for MSI product only. MSI assumes no responsibility for any damages resulting from improper use or lack of technical expertise.

Attention:
Users who download BIOS here(not using Live Update) should use the flash utility, attached in the downloading compressed file package, to conduct BIOS update. To avoid BIOS update failure, please don't try to use the utility which is the old version or not sourced from here. "

Well when you get your new stuffs, post back in the motherboard forum and let the folks know how it's going or if you need any help with something. Have fun with it.

If you do not need to flash your bios, DO NOT FLASH IT.

If you screw up flashing your bios, you have a broken motherboard and you just wasted ~$100. Unless you know what you are doing, and have GOOD reason to be flashing a bios, don't do it.

yes, that is good advice BTW... the rule of thumb for BIOSes is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." ;)
