Im a first timer reading up on some stuff,

I have windows installed (as I read I should install windows first thats a +) and I have my hard drive partitioned. I have a partition ready for linux of 40gb. do I just install to that drive? and then will it ask me what OS I want to start when I boot up my box?..

sorry but Im kind of new to the linux scene.

edit: Also what version of linux should I use? Im comtimplating SuSE or Kubuntu.

Most distros with a GUI installer (SUSE or Kubuntu will feature this) will list other operating systems on the drive and ask if you would like to include them in the list of systems to boot. Just say yes and you are all set.

I woud recommend giving Kubuntu a shot, it is very easy to work with and has a great installer.

Im getting an error whenever I try to login

*Failure to login* or somthing along that lines..
the username/password is correct.. any ideas?

Did you get to a GUI login window or a login prompt on the command line?

You would have set a username and password during the installation of Kubuntu. Try logging in with that.

there is a distro that says its interface is fairly similar to windows. it is elx. i have never used it, but that is what it says. i do plan on doing an install of it in the near future to see what it is like.

Its a GUI,

I did it says login failed

Unfortunetly you are most likely typing or remembering it wrong, make sure you try with caps on, caps off, if you are using numeric make sure num lock is on, etc. I have never heard of any 'bug' or other such thing that would prevent you from logging in with the password you made.

You can try hitting CTRL-ALT-F2 at the GUI login and attempt logging in with your username/password there, to eliminate the possiblity of KDM using some odd backend (not PAM) or the wrong encryption, or god knows what. If you can't login at the shell prompt, you are indeed using the wrong username and password.

I'll try that, though im positive I didn't forget the password becuase I just tried it on VPC same error..

I have found unbuntu takes the initial boot is root not the user account you setup and the password you created for it try it it should fire up then you can boot the user account.I am not a linux guru just my experience.
