Installing HD5850 using molex to pci-e power cable.

My HD5850 is going to be delivered today and I can't locate the second PCI-E power cable for my PSU. I've only been using one with my 8800GT for the last three years.

Are the molex to PCI-E adapters adequate? Can I use my existing PCI-E power cable and one molex to PCI-E, or should I use the molex adapter for both?

Also, are these cables standard? Can I pick up the cable by itself from a local store such as Microcenter?

Any and all help would be much appreciated!

There is nothing wrong with using the adapters. I'd use the existing pcie connector plus an adapter.

Using adaptors is usualy OK, you can check the power draw over each cable that your PSU is rated for if you look it up. Generally speaking I think you need 2 molex connectors to safely provide the maximum power draw over a 6 pin PCI-E cable, there are some single molex to single PCI-E power cables, I'd avoid those.

Using the adapters is usually fine, even with one PCIe 6-pin and one adapter. As long as your PSU doesn't get overburdened, you're fine.

It's funny: in the documentation provided with my XFX 5850 card, they tell us that using a 2x molex to PCIe power adapter is not recommended, as the card is "designed to work with only high-end power supplies," yet in the box they give us 2 such adapters.

it's like your parents telling you, "we don't want you watching porn all day, it's disgusting and degrades women. that said, we put bookmarks in your Firefox to some really rad sites. Don't click on them."

that power supply is modular. Look in the box to see if you have the other cables. If you contact corsair, they will send you whatever pcie cable you need for free. I have requested them twice. Go to corsair forums and look around for contact person to email.

LOL nice analogy. I'll contact corsair to see if they can help me out.

I've looked for the cables but to no avail. I bought it over three years ago :(

Is it bad to use the adapter with modular PSUs?

Thanks for the help everyone. :)

Priceless

I agree, if the PSU can take the wattage and the 12v rail then you should be fine.

Contact corsair, they will send you free pcie cables. Use the adapter for now, while waiting for them.

dont split off in use connectors like fans or drives make sure it's straight from PSU to GPU with nothing inbetween. I had a couple funky GTS250's which required 4 6pin connectors total. None of which my server class psu had. Worked just fine with adapters. Personally I find the quad-sli approved $300+ psu's they're shilling these days to be downright shameful.
