Installing Catalyst Safely

Not to long ago I tried installing what was then the latest version of Catalyst with no success. I tried every uninstaller and ATI removal tool that i could find and coulnt get it off my machine and install the latest version. I think i am still using 8.9 and want to upgrade to 9.2 now.

Without having to rebuild my pc again and not having to go to safe boot etc.

What would be the best way to install it without any problem. I am scared to try with the fear of having to go trough it all again :-(

I am using Vista x64 - Service Pack 1. and 4870 card

And what issues were you having exactly? installing new drivers should be a breeze 99.9% of the time, unless there is something messed up with the original install. Or people using drivercleaner because they think it helps.
 
I was purely tring to install it. didnt use anything other than the installation but then got errors. couldnt install the new or old version and was stuck on minimum resolution and colours.

more so to make sure that i dont run into that again, all i have to do is download the new drivers and install them with administrator privelages? no need for uninstalling anything?

Well some people do install them over the top of previous installations. Personally I'm not a fan of that, and I always remove the old ones first then install new, all I use is the following :

1) Uninstall old drivers using ATi uninstall program

2) Delete ATi folder from c:\ (if it exists)

3) Reboot

4) Install new drivers (shouldn't matter about administrator rights if using Vista)

5) Reboot

That's it. Always worked for me from day 1.

You mentioned errors though, what errors exactly?
 
I cant recall exactly as it was a couple of months ago. but i do remember that it maintained that there was files left on the pc. and could not install because of this.

and no matter what ati cleaner i used after this i couldnt get it to install anything.
 
The Catalyst install manager should take care of upgrading your drivers fine. Recently I've been installing on top of my current drivers without issue.
 
I have had trouble uninstalling ATI drivers and the CCC a few times myself.

I had success getting it all off the puter with Driver Cleaner Professional

Also, I use TweakNow PowerPack 2006, under the section for Windows
Enhancements, there is a section for Control Panel which occasionally
will do Uninstall when the one built in to Windows XP doesn't even budge.

All your doing is deleting the folder where the installation files were extracted to. Your method doesn't actually remove the drivers. If you want to remove your graphics drivers you have to use Driver Cleaner or some other method in which you remove all the associated registry entries, dlls, etc.

I replied in the 5th post with that. Sorry cant remember the exact error message.

Just remembered that I could install catalyst because there were still files on the pc, and i tried all driver remover software but that got me no where. Tried everything i could and ended up having to rebuild it as i was stuck. I couldnt do a roll back either.

But as was mentioned by Violater it might have been a corrupt install from the start?? My feeling is that it might have been.

Look at no.1, that is removing the drivers. Deleting the ATi folder just makes sure vista doesn't pick up the old drivers from there. You do not need to use DriverCleaner or any junk like that.

if it's some file that you cant delete. try boot into safe mode and delete it. if you are still unable to delete it, assuming your are with admin privilege, try take ownership of that file (right-click, then security) and kill it.

that's all i could think of right now.
 
Just install on top of the old ones, install manager will revert device to vga-mode, remove old files and update device to latest version :D
