hey guys, i've got a WD SATA drive now, and i have it plugged into SATA port 1.

when i boot up, the computer reads the SATA drive (my primary) as a slave. how do i make it read as primary?

I don't know about SATA drives, but certainly on IDE drives, there are a set of pins that you need to bridge with jumpers... Usually, there should be a small picture on the HD itself showing what "Primary Master", "Secondary Master", "Primary Slave" or "Secondary Slave" configurations are.

only thing the jumpers do on WD satas is involve power management. i have the jumper across pins 1 and 2, default from the manufact.

abit gave me a disk with my motherboard, labeled SATA driver disk. Do i use this by pressing F6 at windows installation screen?

Yes, you will need that to install the drive. The fastest way to get the SATA drive to boot as the Master is to pull the power from your other HDDs. If this helps at all I had to enable the RAID setup in my BIOS just so my single SATA would boot right.

ok, i'm in bios under standard CMOS features. only my SATA is running

it is listed under IDE Channel 2 Master.

is this ok?

edit, plugged the other drive back in.

Now i get this
IDE channel 1 Slave (the sata)
IDE channel 2 Master (CD drive
IDE channel 2 Slave (my file drive)

well i got windows on it before you suggested unplugging the other drive. i didnt finish setup, and i didnt even hit F6 before installation of windows.

i just want this thing to be the master ... yet it reads slave. do i just not worry or what

If it works fine and boots to Windows normally then I would say don't worry about it.
