Installing a DVD Burner, need help Please!

My computer has two drives, a DVD-ROM drive and a CD-RW drive.
I bought a DVD burner this past weekend, and am currently trying to install it.
I took out the old drive, and replaced it with the new one, hooked everything up the same way as before, and when I turned it on, the computer didn't recognize either drive now, not even the old CD-RW drive I never even replaced or tampered with. Also, booting up was a painfully slow process for some reason.

After doing some troubleshooting, I decided to pop the old drive back in, and take the new burner out to see what happened, and the machine booted up fine, both drives were recognized with no problems.

I'm not sure whether the drive requires different hook-ups or what, but before the DVD-ROM drive and CD-RW drive were hooked up with a ribbon cable, and an IDE cable, nothing else. Everything was supposedly hooked up to the motherboard and power supply, etc. properly by the manufacturer, so I didn't tamper with that, I just took the two cables off the original drive, popped the new one in, and attached those cables.

This is my current situation, so if anyone can help me to guide me on where I could've gone wrong, that would be much appreciated!
 
Most likely the old drive you took out had the IDE chanel selection jumper set to Slave and the new drive (like most new drives) has it set to Master.

Each drive on the cable (max of two) needs to have a different setting. I suspect that the drive that's in there right now is set as the Master.

There is also a setting for cable select etc. but i'm not going go to into that, it just confuses matters.

Basically just set your new drive to slave and I bet it'll work. The jumper is on the rear side of the drive, on one side of the IDE conneciton. There will be a jumper on it (a little piece of plastic that shorts two pins). According to the diagram on the back of the drive (or sometimes on the label on the top of the drive) set it to the slave position.
 
Also, see if your bios is set to not autodetect. Some bios's you can do a scan from the bios for hardware and set it so it won't scan for them during startup. Then it looks for them and has issues when it doesn't find them.
