I got a 40gig harddrive but need more space so im going to buy either a 120gb or 160gb hd tomorrow. I want 2 hds in so how would i do this?

do I just plug it in to the computer and it works just like a cd rom drive would? and when i format my hd and install windows again what hd do i put windows on?
 
take your 40gb and make it master and ur 120gb or 160 slave. make sure u do the jumpers on the back of the drives to make them master or slave. and when ur in windows, right click the drive in my computer and click on format. and if u want you can put the 120 or 160 as primary and 40 as slave and reinstall xp on ur new hd. its that simple. which ever hd u configure master will be C:
 
I want my 40gig haddrive to stay as master for now and i want my 120/160gig to be slave.

So basically i switch the jumper on the new hd to slave and thats it? i dont have to go into the BIOS to change any settings there? just put in the new harddrive, set it as slave via the jumper switch and done?


Soon, i will be reinstalling windows again so I will want my 120/160gb hd as master and my 40 as slave, so i just switch the jumpers on the 40 to slave and switch the jumper switch to master on the 120/160?
 
Nope, your board is new enough that you shouldn't need to flash to update drive compatibility.

Just set the jumper to slave, plug it in and go.
 
Just make sure that you put your 40gb as master and then your new hard drvie as slave.

When you go about reinstalling the OS and want to have the new hard drive with the OS, then make that one master and change your 40gb to slave.
 
Why don't you just make the new drive the primary windows drive now?
Retail drives usually come with a drive copying program to copy the old drive to the new drive. do that, and then set the new drive as master and old one as slave and be happy with teh increased speed of windows (assuming that the new drive is faster than the 40gigger)
 
jumper and connect as outlined above
(Master at the End of the cable \ Black Connector)
BIOS > verify its recognized
(if there is any problem, check connections and or change both drives on that cable to Cable select and try again)

Boot to OS
Start > Run > (type) diskmgmt.msc > Verify its recognized (will be approx 10% smaller than the advertised size)
> Rclick unallocated space > Partition & Format

until partitioned, formatted and assigned a drive letter(s)
it will not be visible in My Computer or Windows Explorer
