I have a 3 year old Asus P5B Delux motherboard based gaming PC which I've been running XP on. I finally decided after acquiring a new 500 GB SATA hard disk to install Windows 7 on this 2nd hard disk. After installing the disk I checked in the BIOS to see if I could choose to boot form this disk but although the disk shows up connected to a SATA port it isn't available to choose as a boot device. I decided to proceed anyway after reading something in a Windows 7 forum about dual boot and was happy once installed to see the boot manager give me the choice of which OS to boot. Now still in the BIOS I can't chose this 2nd hard disk so I assume that Windows 7 has overwritten the boot sector on the 1st hard disk and installed it's boot loader there so it's still booting from disk 1.
My questions are why does the BIOS not allow to choose which disk to boot from? I'd initially imagined I would install Window 7 on the 2nd hard disk and choose at boot time which hard disk to boot from although on investigation there is not function key which allows you to choose which disk to boot from and changing it in the BIOS every time would have been too cumbersome.
If I had disconnected the 1st disk during the Windows 7 install would I have been able to choose this 2nd disk in the BIOS, doesn't seem likely as you can still choose removable devices and optical drives which are not present at the time you change the settings.
This is just FMI, everything is working but I'd just like to know the how and why.
