Are there any open source or free tools that will scan network computers and identify what software is installed on workstations? We are trying to verify that no users have logmein, vnc or other remote access tools installed that would allow a user to circumvent using the VPN for remote access.

I know of a bunch of $$ tools that do this, but I basically have zero budget to work with.

I was looking at Spiceworks but its more of a monitoring tool and im not sure how fast i could gather results.

Anyone have experience with Spiceworks?
What else would you recommend?

I'd give spiceworks a shot, I'll agree that it is a little wonky but once you get used to it, it's very informative. I do wish it was a little more customizable but it works, and for 8 sites and 300 users, it'll be easier than trying to pull individual reports from each pc.

At least it's easy enough to install and uninstall if you don't like it.
 
Yea with a larger environment like that single run softwares like Belarc would just be cumbersome.

Spiceworks or Lansweeper are probably your best bets.

Belarc (the free version) is not licensed for commercial use, fyi. They have a corporate edition that'd you need to buy. Not sure if there are any differences between the free and corporate edition (like network scanning instead of visiting each individual computer).

Umm yes, lan sweeper and spiceworks are both free
 
Anyone have experience with Lansweeper in an MSP scenario? As far as establishing VPN tunnels to my clients and scanning from a server in my office, or do you need to do a tiered structure with a lansweeper server at each site, and either way, would the premium license cover that, or would you need to go to the support model license which only supports 40 companies?
 
You could use the consultant license to do a one time audit. If you want the server to persist, looks like you'd have to go for the support company license.

And timreichart's comment begs the question Nitro, do you need to scan more than one domain? If not then it's moot.
 
we bought a 300 pc license for NEWT (Komodo labs), scans very fast and very much info!
