Hey guys. Installed an Accelero Xtreme on my 6950 to get temps under control at a reasonable noise level. Idles at 28C, Kombustor load at 40C and I can't hear it at all versus my other fans. Mission accomplished.

Only problem is 4 of my ram sinks are touching the base plate of the heat sink. I can unseat the cooler and pop the ram sinks off and offset the ramsinks a little bit more to give the base room but I'm wondering if I am making a mountain over a molehill. To clarify, the cooler is seated fine, I am just worried about heat transferring from the GPU to the ramsinks, at least partially.

How exactly will taking off the ram sinks potentially damage the ram chips? I used Seksui thermal tape. Have had no issues in the past pulling ramsinks off and putting stock coolers back on. Just used a hair dryer to heat up the Seksui and then twisted them off easily. Also, the ram sinks are aftermarket in the first place, not sure how the removal of aftermarket ram sinks would cause my warranty to be voided...Care to elaborate on these points?

Well since you already added them then go I would adjust the ram sinks. I was told by Gskill that If I took off my sinks or even add sinks to my current memory that doesnt have any I will lose my warranty.

Also ive seen plenty of users with factory installed ram sinks pull to hard and rip pieced of their memory thus destroying their chips.

Just a heads-up but this is a video card, as in aftermarket ramsinks for an aftermarket cooler on a AMD 6950. I think you can do damage by trying to remove ramsinks that have been permanently affixed using some sort of thermal adhesive paste, but that's why I have always used Seksui thermal tape.
 
What exact cooler did you use? There are several variations of the accelero xtreme. This is just a question out of curiousity as I have two BNIB original accelero xtremes sitting and I'd like to make use of them

I would reseat it to avoid contact with the ramsinks and the heatpipes, but if it's working you really don't NEED to..

My bad wow lack of sleep turns me into an idiot. I edited my posts above sorry for that mistake I thought I was in the memory section. How much contact is it making. is it just barely touching or is it kind of pushing on the heatsink. If its putting alittle force on the heatsink I would reseat it if its just barely touching I would leave it

NP man. I am just going to reseat it. It's not that big of a deal to do so and it will let me sleep easier.
 
Reseated it no problem. Shaders uinlocked/voltage upped and a 925/1250 overclock with idle at 27C and full load at 39C now.
 
ehh too much trouble and money, rather spend a little more for specialized HSF from video card company. Oh.. whippie you run cooler and quieter, big freaking deal...

It was some work and money. However, my video card was running @ 100C w/ 100% fan during normal gaming. With my computer being on my desk now, the sound was unbearable when using speakers instead of headphones. In lieu of RMA'ing the card, and then still being stuck with a noisy cooler and limited OC potential due to thermal problems, I decided to just get a new cooler. Going to try and hit 1ghz on the core tonight with some volts.

they should be fine even if the ram sinks are touching the heatsink.. hell it might even cool those 4 chips better since the heats being transfered to the heatsink. but the ram its self doesn't run hot enough to make a huge difference, the VRM's on the other hand you have to be really picky about since those are the hottest running parts on the card.

ok didn't know how hot you were running the video card before, sorry about that, my sarcasm sometimes gets in the way of reason. Hey good luck with hitting 1Ghz, cheers!
