installed 9600gt...affect cpu??

Hey guys, i recently installed a 9600gt and have been having problems playing back x264 encoded video files.

I have had my cpu overclocked to 2.5ghz for quite some time now. I've overclocked an a64 and an x2 in the past, both to 2.5ghz with a wall of 2.6ghz so i guess what you are about to read is fitting. I just recently got a 9600gt and a arctic freezer 7 pro, and decided to try for more. Well I really couldnt get anymore out of it (could be the ram, shitty stepping) but in any case I had given up on getting anymore than ~2.6ghz without super high vcore or random restart of pc.

nonetheless, the more exciting prospect was the brand new 9600gt video card. God did i debate between 8800gt and 9600gt. But in the end I've seen the sli performance and plan to go the 9600gt sli route in the future. I've installed many video cards before so even if it was hard to do, I was up to the challenge ;) Everything went smoothly replacing the 7900gt, except that the 9600 is significantly longer and getting the card in place while keeping wires out of the way was frustrating but a minute or two and many more terse words, and all was well.

installed the drivers, everything seems fine. try company of heroes (only recent game installed) and can play with very nice settings...now the problem:

VIDEOS THAT USED TO PLAY FINE ON PC --STUTTER??!!

It's like the cpu has lost some speed...it does not make sense. I can't be sure the percentage of cpu usage for x264 1080p .mkv files, but it appears that only 1 core is processing the video, causing stuttering like when the cpu isn't up to the task. I've checked affinity, reinstalled coreavc, tried vlc media player...no go.

After the cpu trouble, then this...i wish i hadn't spent any money at all :(

any ideas?? i'm lost and tired of pc quirks

UPDATE:: I returned everything to stock settings in the bios, and now all is well...i've never had overclocking troubles before, what does this mean? could I have damaged my cpu when trying to overclock it some more?
 
did u uninstall the previous drivers properly with driver cleaner pro in safe mode ?
 
Just did, thanks for the tip. I saw the problems people have been having with the drivers. It didn't fix my cpu problem but I think it did fix a new problem where the game goes black screen although i didn't experience the pc rebooting like most people seemed to, i could just ctrl-alt-del out for whatever reason.

But in any case I have new info. I had call of duty 2 installed on my pc and gave putting all settings at max @ 1920x1080 a try since last vid card couldn't handle it. The stutters happened for this also with a 2.5ghz cpu overclock that i 100% know previously worked in many games (including cod2) and applications and 24hr orthos.

BUT when i returned all cpu settings in bios to default the stutter stopped. Now i noticed the 9600gt appears to have a spdif audio connector on it...is it possible that something in the new drivers are conflicting with the drivers for my motherboard's audio?...doesn't seem likely to me if everything works fine without any kind of overclock but i'm definitely no expert.

anyone with any ideas? I am lost. My only thought is the cpu or mobo is messed up?

Meanwhile, call of duty 4 with 1600x900 with all settings maxed is awesome!!
 
hum what power supply you using? Sounds like the new video card pushed you over the edge.
 
its a Hiper 580W psu. It had great reviews on newegg although mine is not there anymore and my last psu had crapped out on me so i went with what i thought would be a great psu that would be more than i'd need...

my rig is as follows:
e4400 o/c to 2.5ghz - arctic freezer 7 pro
gigabyte 965p-ds3
9600gt
2x1gb dd2-800 ram
hiper 580W psu
3x hard drives
2 dvd drives
4 80mm case fans

now that you mention it i have a look online and it seems people have had problems with these failing after a year or so...i've had mine since august of last year but with the psu having known problems.... Could be that or something else but that is good to know.

shoulda gone with antec or something...this is very frustrating. Are there any ways to test if a power supply is near it's end?

also, i put this power supply into my old s939 X2 7900gt rig (now bro's), would that be adequate for my setup if i got around to removing it from that pc and giving it a shot in my own?

one more q, this might be a newbie type question but if my psu does have problems and thats why things get shaky with the o/c but is fine without it and no other troubles present themselves then would i be alright running my rig at default speeds until i get around to the 2nd 9600gt in (at least) a few months and just get a new power supply then? (can you tell yet that i know little of power supplies?)
