Installed 2nd 7970. 2D clock issue

I recently installed a 2nd 7970 for crossfire (both HIS brands) and in 2D mode the second gpu is stuck at 500mhz while the 1st gpu is at the correct 300mhz gpu core. I played BF3 and confirmed both cards run at the correct 3D clock speed.

Anyone else have issues with this? My brother has the same setup except Sapphire brand and his is running the correct 300mhz in 2D mode.

Im currently running Catalyst 12.4 with 12.4 CAP as well as MSI afterburner 2.2.1.

so it seems like the 2nd gpu will downclock to 300 correctly after playing game. Once I reboot, the 2nd gpu will stay at 500mhz at idle.

Anyone else have this issue? Could it be an issue with the drivers or with the bios versions being slightly different?

I flashed the 2nd card to the same bios as the 1st card and its still not down clocking to 300mhz until after I play a game.
 
Hmm.. i guess it could also be because of Afterburner.. Do you have the same 2d clocks for both cards set the same? Have you tried booting the system without the afterburner loading with windows just to be sure?
 
I uninstalled afterburner to make sure and the 2nd card and its still sitting at 500mhz until I play a game and close out. I tried the same bios as my brother's cards and same driver (12.4 WHQL) and still no luck. I dont understand since the bios versions are the same with the same drivers. Once I play and game and close out it downclocks like normal.

so I installed afterburner 2.2 and ended up uinstalling and reinstalling afterburner 2.2.1 and it seems to be working correctly now so it was most likely an afterburner issue.
 
Shoot.. so you had Afterburner installed prior to installing the 2nd card? Yeah you must uninstall afterburner prior to installing more cards and install it again fresh afterwards or it will be messed up.

Just be sure to fully uninstall afterburner and that means making sure you dont allow it to keep your old saved settings.
 
So I decided to install the 12.6 driver and now Im having the exact same issue again.....2nd card is not downclocking to 300mhz until after I start a game and exit out.

Can someone please explain the process to get this crap working correctly with MSI afterburner?

Mines all messed up.. First card runs at 27-33% while the other 2 run at 100 in gaming.. Plus the first card is clocked correct at defaults while the other 2 runing at 100% are only runing at 500Mhz. haha

Ok.. No idea.

reenabling ULPS does not allow afterburner to see the second card at all. Everything was working before and now its not. I had everything working correctly with 12.x 8.971 and 12.4 CAP before I tried changing to 12.6 driver and CAP.

Do the CAP's having anything to do with it? I Just dont understand how the second card doesn't downclock to the correct 300mhz until after a game or 3D application. Functionally, everything works fine and it doesn't hurt anything with the 2nd card sitting at 500mhz, but my brothers systems has both cores idling at 300mhz.
 
Some strange stuff for me late last night. Seemed if i went and changed the crossfire config (2,3,4) it would fix itself. So basicly i ran it first at quadfire and BF3 ran in slow motion cause the first card was at like 20% while the others were at 500Mhz and 100% usage. Changing crossfire to 3 cards and at first it was fine.. so i went to try quad again and it seemed fine but still would lock up in no time in BF3.

So i went to change it back to tri fire and this time it was all messed up with again the first card at 20% clocked right but the other 2 at 500Mhz and runing at 100%.. So i changed it back to quadfire and then quickly back to tri fire and then all was fine.. I kept playing with it and most of the time it was a hit or miss if it would run the cards right with most of the time the first runing at 20% usage.

No idea if its cause of the older 11.12 i had prior or the damn drivers just get confused of the card order or what.

No tearing on the desktop so thats a huge plus.. so far seem basicly just like the 11.12 drivers i've always been using in that i can only run tri fire with BF3.. Quad fire and the game will crash in 15-30 secs in.


I have no idea what the hell is ULPS.. heard of it a million times over but no idea lol.

Oh so i guess if you only have 2 cards installed try disabling crossfire and enable it again and see what happends. Of course make sure afterburner is not runing when you do it.
 
Having the exact same issue here. I have two HD7950s and the 2nd card will not drop to the proper 2d clock speeds @ idle until I have run a 3D application and quit it, afterward it works properly going in and out of 3D applications (returns to proper idle clocks).
 
I also have this problem, my idle temps for GPU2 end up being 60c or more until I exit a 3D application. The memory clocks are 1475 as well then revert to normal afterwards.

This is an issue because the fan profiles (probably for everyone) are set to 30ish until temps go over 50+. If I exit a 3D application the temps hover around 45 which is normal.

Fresh booting into windows has my fan at 60% (1:1 ratio) for desktop use which is unacceptable. Disabling ULPS could fix it I guess but we would lose the ability to monitor the 2nd GPU.
