Insignia 23" LCD TV question

Hi there,

I have a friend who recently purchased an Insignia 23" widescreen LCD TV from best buy for $900 (regularly $1300) The intention is to use it as a computer monitor via DVI. For this purpose, it rocks. The picture quality is excellent, no screen door effect, and an awesome refresh rate for the size (<16ms)

Works great for windows and pc games rock. Our problem is that we also want to use it as an HDTV, which technically it is, as thats how they sell it at ol' BBY. The reason they are so cheap is because they suck as an HDTV, kind of funny, as thats what they are designed for.

In playing Xbox on it via the HD pack, or watching HDTV on it, we just can't seem to get the colors right, it has a very "brown" tone to it, and greens and reds really come across as off. The onscreen controls can't seem to adjust enough and the picture just sucks. I'm currently running a sony 17" widescreen and it kills this thing in color and clarity.

I'm curious if anyone here in the know has access to the service codes used to adjust tv's beyond what you are allowed in the end user controls. I've tried googling it, and I can't find anything. So if anybody knows anything I'd love to hear it. I'm going to try and see what we can do with one of those THX optimzer dvd's I've got laying around here somewhere but I'm doubting thats going to cut it.If we can't get the picture good, he's taking it back.

Before anybody asks, it's not defective, as they all seem to look this way, even the store displays, and the bigger model, the 26"

I was thinking about picking up the 26"pretty soon unless we can't get the picture right. Then I'll just have to save up for a samsung or something. Because those look pretty sweet in both PC and HDTV modes.

There are a lot of “off brand” monitors out there that all seem to work to one degree or another, but none seem to anything very well.

Your sort of asking for a Yugo like product to perform like a Mercedes like product. Life just doesn’t work that way.
 
Thanks for a lot of no help, you insulting phallus. I appreciate it. NO, I am not asking for a yugo to be a mercedes. I'm asking if anyone knows any service codes that would allow me to access a more detailed set of menus inside the TV that are normally locked to the consumer. I'm not asking for an opinion of my taste in product. And thanks for your detail of what life is like, that was skippy.

The LCD's offered by Insignia at best buy are made by Quanta, and use a trident chipset to control the TV.

it goes by Trident's DPTV(TM)3DPRO and PanelPro(TM)Multimedia (PMM)

The panel is not a yugo or a piece of shit, if it was it would suck all the time and not look amazing when hooked up digitally via DVI. The colors are spot on and it looks better than the Sony HDTV 17" LCD I'm using now.

I'm looking for an explanation as to why this thing drops it's ass on the ground when hooked via an analog or non digitally transferred HDTV connection. I'm guessing that either something isn't calibrated right or it can't handle digital to analog conversions very well. The digital side of things is fine. Being that Quanta makes LCD panels and they have probably grafted a tuner ic onto this thing, more than likely explains the difference in qualities.

that said, does anybody have any knowledge pertaining to my original question?

Any info is greatly appreciated.
