Hello [H]

I'd appreciate any insight with my SFF build. I'm most concerned with heat issues in such a small case with air cooling.

Brief:
  • Primary Purpose: Linux gaming system that will be used for travel
  • Primary Concern: Heat
  • Primary OS: Linux (will try to run windows VM for games)

Components:
  • Case:
    • SilverStone RAVEN RVZ02B-W
  • CPU Cooler:
    • Noctua NH-L9i
  • Video:
    • ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 ZT-P10600A-10L (1060 mini)
  • Drive:
    • SAMSUNG 256GB 950 PRO MZ-V5P256BW (m.2 ssd)
  • CPU:
    • Intel Core i5-6600 6M
  • MB:
    • GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0)
  • Memory:
    • G.SKILL 32GB (2 x 16GB) Ripjaws V Series
  • Power:
    • SILVERSTONE 500W SX500-LG
  • Drive:
    • Kingston 480GB SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/480G (optional)
Questions:
  1. What will you be doing with this PC?
    • PC gaming. Linux OS - I'll try and run a windows VM primarily for games
    • standard PC stuff (Office work/Watching streaming video/some audio editing)
    • setup twitch streaming test - nothing serious
  2. Overclock
    • None
  3. Budget
    • Flexible, but I'd like to keep it in the $1200 Range
  4. Where are you?
    • tampa, but I'll get items online
  5. What do you need?
    • Listed above
  6. Reusing Parts
    • I have a pair of SSD (Samsung 840 I can reuse)
  7. Motherboard features required?
    • Required: Wifi - onboard sound mini-ITX
  8. Resolution:
    • 1080p
  9. Space
    • will travel travel so it has to fin in luggage
    • Carry on limits: 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm)
    • I have available space for vertical setup
  10. Comfortable with customizing case
    • no
  11. Sound
    • Reasonably quiet - not a priority
  12. How Mobile
    • SFF should be very mobile
    • Needs to fit on carry on and I don't want to deal with water cooling at security check points
    • Straps/handles are not important.
    • No HDD
  13. OS
    • Linux
    • Windows VMs
    • I have transferable license for windows
  14. When
    • 2-3 weeks

You'll be fine. The Raven is by no means a tiny case, and those are by no means hot components. You're good to go.

looks fine but Linux and gaming?! kinda limiting yourself there...

Also, why not use two SSDs and install Linux on the first one and Win on the second one? You are limiting performance by trying to run games in a VM...

Because then the Commies win.

Do you want the Commies to win!?

NOBODY WANTS THE COMMIES TO WIN!

Thanks for the feedback.

FISCHER case has 58mm space and Big Shurk lists 58mm height. I'll check the C7 is 47mm. I think layout means it would be blowing out of the case .... thanks

pendragon1 agreed linux gaming is limiting - some recent windows headaches (windows7 updates) and the direction of windows 10 (annual subscription) have me wanting to try the plunge and see what I can get working

Aircoookie I'll try some windows VM and wine where I can, but I do have a spare SSD I can use for exactly that if I get to that point

You're fine, I'm running a xeon E3-1230v3 cooled by a Noctua NH-L12 and a GTX1070 in an ncase M1 which is way more crammed inside. Idle temps are 30C for the CPU and 33C for the GPU.
