The Wall Street Journal has a somewhat intriguing “behind the scenes” take on how the Apple phone came into existence, what was said, what deals were made and how it all worked out in the end. I find it funny that the WSJ seems surprised that Jobs is condescending and dismissive during negotiations. Say it isn’t so!

Mr. Jobs once referred to telecom operators as "orifices" that other companies, including phone makers, must go through to reach consumers. While meeting with Cingular and other wireless operators he often reminded them of his view, dismissing them as commodities and telling them that they would never understand the Web and entertainment industry the way Apple did, a person familiar with the talks says.

Here in Canada we have Rogers, Bell, Fido and Telus... All of these are crap and some of what Jobs says is very true. If it wasn't for the internet and the influence it brings to the mass we would be in the stone age here. Rogers is the worst.

The ultimate Mac zealot? Condescending?

it seems useless for the price. id rather carry a phone, an MP3 player, and a laptop around, than that...purpose built devices. more expensive, but more useful over all.

Funny isn't it that one of those "commodity orifices" (Cingular) managed to lock Apple into an exclusive carrier deal for the iphone.

Interesting read... That's probably why Jobs's (and the crowd's as a whole, for that matter) introduction of and enthusiasm over including a specific wireless carrier felt a little forced at the MacWorld keynote speech.

Weird...I can't edit my own posts. This is the above edited for clarity because I'm too tired to think straight the first time through.

Didn't apple want a cut of the contract that the person signs up with when they buy an iphone and service? I remember reading something about how Apple asked Verizon and Sprint about being an authorized iphone provider as long as they got some cut off the wireless plan and they both told apple to fuck off.
