Im installing xp pro on my 40 gig hard drive thats set to master, but every time i start up i get past post and what not then it says "Disk error insert system disk" I insterted the disk and nothing, just keeps telling me to insert system disk. In bios I have it set to boot from the CD rom first because i need to install xp, Any ideas?

The first question I'll ask is: Does your computer detect the hard drive as the primary master at post?

Some suggestions:

Try to boot from a floppy

If you can boot from a floppy, format the hd and see if that makes a difference

Put the drive into another computer and make sure that it behaves normally in there

Try another bootable cd and see if that works

I just ran across this same deal on a customers 98 machine - "Invalid system disk. Remove the disk and press any key". Wouldn't boot from CDROM either, even though it was set in the BIOS. It would boot from the floppy though. I tried lots of stuff, including unplugging all the drives but the HDD. Still said the same thing. Format C:, reinstall 98, all is good. Figure the MBR got corrupted.
