Insane Mouse Double Clickin' Action

For some incomprehensible reason, my Micro$oft Intellimouse Optical has started acting strangely.
Most of the time now, when I click, it registers as a click, but it also registers a click when i let go of the button.
Understantably, this has been causing me much grief, giving me many unintentional double-clicks.

Any suggestions?

Are you using intellipoint? I just use default windows drivers with mine, never has happened to me.

Well, I am using Intellipoint, but it has never done this before... I can't remember exactly when this started, so I can't say if it could be because of some new bit of software I've installed, but I haven't installed anything mouse-related in quite some time.

I have had this mouse pretty much since MS first made it, though, so this could be just because the mouse is getting old.

Also, this is only for the left mouse button - everything else works just fine.

The switch is bouncing. Either replace the switch or the mouse. Maybe MS will repair it....

A little cleaning never hurts. Open it up and blow out any dust and buildup inside...probably won't solve your problem, but ya never know...

I'll try cleaning it later tonight if i have a chance.

Assuming the worst, where might I find a replacement switch?

I doubt it's still under warranty, but I'm going to check with MS and see if they will do anything for me, or if they would repair it for less than the cost of a new mouse/replacement switch.

Well, I opened up the mouse and just kind of poked the little switch a bit. There was an itty bit of grime around it, and i knocked that off with a needle.

It now seems to have a lower incidence rate of this double clicking, about one out of every twenty or so instead of every other click being a double click.

are you sure you got all of the grime off? maybe you had to rotate it and there was some more grime on another side? or is there, perhaps, grime in other places?

If you're daring, have an alternative mouse to use for a while, and have access to one:

Take the offending part containing the switch and put it in an ultrasonic bath. Let it dry for a week or so.

YMMV.

Or do what I do and swab it down with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol until the switch is dripping with alcohol. Then let it dry a few minutes.
