some new tid bits of info

"Today we can confirm that Nvidia recommends that the PSU for GeForce 6800 Ultra should be no less than a stonking 480W!"

god fuckin damn!

I do however like the proviso that they decided to add at the end regarding all their rumour mongering

"I've been given the heads up on a lot of stick Fudo was receiving, for simply reporting stuff that he was told by numerous reliable sources. These reliable sources had been provided with this information directly from the manufacturers.

If manufacturers are willing to feed their own customers red herrings in a campaigns of FUD and spin, well how much trust should an end-user place in any of these companies, and the claims it makes publicly? Basically what I'm saying is that if these companies are willing to bullshit their own 'friends', then in an effort to extract a wad from a customers wallet, would they not be prepared to bullshit them too?"

Yes, and a 5950u supposedly requires a 350 Watt supply, but it works perfectly in a shuttle with a 200W supply.

Though 480 Watt does seem a bit too high. I have a hard time believing that upgrading one generation of video card requires your PC to have another 130 Watts of power.* Even though the 6800 is geared toward the highend gamer, I know very few people with much more that a 400-450W supply.

I could see them recommending a 400W supply, but I doubt they will change the recommendation above the current 350W

* Yes, I know that 130W isn't all going to the video card :)

thats definitly asking way too much from a PSU... it can't be correct. there are 3 companies that make a PSU that big and they are Enermax (rated pretty well, unlike some of their others.) Antec(always been well known) and PC power and cooling (the holy grail of PSUs)

I wouldnt say perfectly. I get errors all the time saying my card isnt getting enough juice. I have one HD, DVD-rom drive, 2x256ram, 1800+ at default vcore. Nothing extra, but a BFG 5900NU. Currently I have a 250 PSU hooked up to the card, sitting outside my SFF, just to get it to work right.

edit, when and if I upgrade.. Ill be ready. PC Power&Cooling 510 ATX Deulxe here. Rating it how others do, its a 650w.

Why the hell dont they just put a power-line on the back, just like the last Voodoo card???

I mean how many have that high PSU? 4%??

I would rather have one more cord to my computer than getting a new PSU and redo all the wiring.

Well, considering it will probably be a $500 videocard, I don't see a PSU upgrade being an issue for potential buyers.

If it needs this much power, they need to give it an AC adapter.

an 120 w ac brick to have outside the case would cost around $60 so they might aswell bundle it with an psu

With one connector on the backplate? You think the board traces that lead from it could handle that much juice?

well i think i will invest in a cheap 200W PSU if its too much for my 420W

you can use a seperate PSU for jsut a vid card right?

I doubt the lower models will require that much power or they will all need a 5 pound heatsink and a vacuum fan. Also, the high models will probably cost $600 so I am not worried right now.
