This comp will be for my sister who pretty much only does internet, burning cds, and wordprocessing/powerpoint. I realize this is a little overkill for that but she is also upgrading from a PIII 800 MHz so needless to say, this is a multiple year investment.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

2 things though....
1. How is the onboard 6 channel audio on that board (in other words, would she need a sound card)?
2. Already have a keyboard/mouse and getting an 1800fp for monitor.

That said. thanks in advance!!

If that is all she does (internet, burn cds, wordprocess), why do you even need to upgrade her system? Maybe you could just put in a new CD-RW drive and bump up her power there and let her keep with this system for another year.
Just my two cents....

I woudn't use the corsiar memory, or the dvd burner. She won't notice the low timings, and do you think she will ever burn a DVD?

The 9800 pro is OVERKILL, the max I would put in a system for internet only is a 9200.

Just my $0.02usd

I don't care if she has this system til the second coming, she doesn't need all that stuff. You would save alot more money if you got her a 2500+ Barton and an nForce2 board with a 9600np/ pro, the HSF is a bit much IMO, she doesn't need that fast memory, and cut XP Pro get Home, and she probably doesn't need a dvd burner. Those are the only things that I feel your wasting your money on since you built a great Gaming system for someone that does internet, burn cds, wordprocess. Be nice and get her a Cordless Duo MX too.

Get two sticks of this memory.

--EDIT--
Opps the HSF is too loud I forgot about that.

Haha yea really... a $1200 sledgehammer!!! This goes beyond overkill, it's more like throwing money away.

AMD Athlon XP2500 retail with heatsinkfan - $90
Biostar M7NCG400 (nForce2 ultra400 w/Geforce4MX graphics) - $67
256MB x 2 PC3200 memory of your choice - $80-$120 or so
Seagate or Samsung HDD (QUIET!!!) - $60-$120
Panasonic floppy - $10
mATX slim case by athenatech with 200w PSU - $39
DVD/CDRW combo - $50
Windows XP Home - $90

The vantec aeroflow linked above is not quiet, it is LOUD. Don't get that. Also, the biostar motherboard is not only cheaper, but has a passive northbridge heatsink which means even quieter as well.

lol, ok i think i get the idea...

how about this one....http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishHistoryReview.asp?position=HISTORY&submit=VIEW&ID=605701

also, i just presented the idea to my mom who is going to be paying for this little box and she is the kind of person that buys the best of the best and doesn't use half of it's capability and is now concerned with the performance of the new computer.

Anywho, my sister is going to be graduating at some point this year and is going to be doing a lot of statistical analysis (i have no idea how intensive this is on any particular component) but she is worried about using onboard video and also the lower speed processor....

Any idea on how i can justify this, or what i should change?

Thermaltake Silent Boost, thats what you need, quiet and cools great.

If you want to go a little cheaper, get a A7N266-VM with a AthXP 2400+/266. you have onboard GeForce2 graphics and the mobo is only $57.99, free ship on newegg.

Ehh. Maybe add on a DVD-RW or something if you think she'll need it, but that's a perfectly decent budget productivity machine.

Whoa whoa whoa, I think she'd still do fine with the 800 Mhz P3, if cd-burning and word processing are the most intensive things she does. Seriously, I could word process on my 286 perfectly fine, and cd burning? I have friends doing it on Cely 450s and lower. Internet doesn't take much power either.

Buy the parts you actually need, she doesn't need a brand new comp unless she gamed. Statistical analysis is not gonna need cutting edge number crunching comps.

Also, your mom's wacked if you need best of the best for the net and word (no offense). This is like watching adults buying a P4 3.0 Ghz because Best Buy employees say that it allows them to email smoothly.

And why does she need a DVD drive AND a DVD burner? Also, you don't need Corsair at all. Crucial would be more than enough.

For my two cents, stick with what you got. Yes, you read that right. Upgrade maybe the optical drives if you really want, but that should be enough. Don't waste money. I repeat, don't waste money.

Take it for what you will.

Hey now, off of the Best Buy employees :p

If they ask me I'll sell them a frickin Celeron. If they want quick, I sell them an Athlon, if they want a Video Editing machine or want to waste their money, I sell them a P4 :D

I kind of agree with BillLeeLee on that one, upgrade what you need maybe put in some more memory, that is unless she feels like her current PC is getting slow.
I have a A7N266-VM AA that I use for a HTPC (actually right now I'm using for video editing) with the onboard video (GF 2MX), 512mb and it performs very well. Asus boards are pretty solid. Wait til after Valentines Day because AMD will be cutting some prices, the 2500+ Barton is suppose to go for around $75. I also noticed that you forgot XP and some speakers.

OK, well since money is obviously no object here, then you definitely absolutely SHOULD go with a higher end CPU, in my opinion. There's really no reason to get anything less, right?... especially since the higher end cpu's are around $200-$250 which is not bad at all. P4 3.0C or XP3200+. Even consider the A64 3000+ for $224 retail. And since it's a multiple year investment, go for a gig of RAM.

I know when I run my rig at XP3200+ compared to XP2500, I do feel the nice speed increase. In fact, since mom is concerned, I would go with the A64 3200+. Again, why not right? :)

The overkill I saw with your first bunch of choices was mainly the video card. I would get a 9600pro or XT if anything, but a 9800, nah. If you think she might have a clue, even get the 9600-AIW with the TV recording/video inputs for about $200 I think. That could be very useful :)

I'd totally stay away from western digital drives with ball bearings, they are loud. Do her a favor and get quiet components, quiet PSU, quiet heatsinkfan (zalman is a good choice there, but may not fit on all motherboards, plus it's HEAVY. Consider the Thermaltake silent boost :) ) and a quiet HDD. I'd also get a motherboard that supports serial ATA and get a s-ata hdd also.

I have a Western Digital 120gig 8cache drive and it isn't very loud at all, Hell my 92mm fan is louder then it. I had really wanted to get a Seagate 120 SATA drive but since this one was on sale and my current motherboard doesn't have SATA I decided to get it.
