I currently have a DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D mobo, an Athlon X2 64 4600+, Leadtek PX9600GT Extreme, 4 hard drives, DVD burner, 6 Case fans, and some other various components. I was running all of this on a 500W power supply that came in my Apevia X-Navigator case. I just upgraded the Video Card a few days ago from dual SLI XFX 7900GT's. I was running this setup with the two 7900GT's for about 3 years now or so and everything worked fine, but a couple of days after I put in the new video card my PSU EXPLODED! I mean loud arc-ing noises and flashes of blue light on the wall behind my computer and some smoke then the system just shuts off. Hopefully it didn't fry everything in my computer. I just ordered a 650W BFG Tech PSU for it though. Assuming that the whole thing didn't fry, would this PSU be able to push my current hardware without exploding?

I might also be upgrading the system to a BIOSTAR TForce TP45D2-A7 LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard, and a Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core CPU. Do you think that the 650W BFG PSU would push those alright or would I have to upgrade to something bigger for those?

That PS should work fine for what you got. The 9600 should take a lot less power than 2-7900gts. The upgraded motherboard and cpu will work wonders for your comp.

Huh, surprised the PSU didn't die earlier. Anyway Apevia is well known for making shitty PSUs. When your Apevia PSU died, it may have killed some if not all the parts of your PC. So be on the lookout for dead parts. Look for burn marks, bulging capacitors, etc.

That BFG 650W PSU should be able to handle your current and new rig. However, is it too late to cancel the order? I'm pretty sure that you could've gotten a better PSU for the price you paid for the BFG 650W PSU. Speaking of which, how much did you pay for that BFG PSU?

I payed $50 shipped for it brand new in the box on Ebay. I did alot of shopping around and there are alot of cheap psu's out there, but this one had a name I recognized and all of the right plugs on it so I went for it.

There's a sucker born every day.....:p;) A $40 shipped Antec EarthWatts 380 would have been a better investment. Scrap the Apevia/Assfire before it blows.

i don't think you read this post very carefully. The apevia psu already went out and that's not what I paid $50, it came with my case that I bought like 3 years ago. What I paid $50 for was a BFG Tech 650W psu which sells for over $100 normally. And what's with the 380W suggestion? Do you honestly think that a 380W psu will push the hardware I mentioned??? lol

Yup, I was rushed into the reply since I was doing too many things at once. :p Believe it or not the Antec EA-380 would provide enough power for your rig since I'd wager that you're pulling <300W from the wall which is <240W on the psu if you factor in 80% efficiency.

How Much Power Do You Really Need For Your PC? Yet Another Experiment

Don't judge a psu by wattage or brand. In any event having more headroom is a good thing, and I was merely commenting on the low quality Aspire/Apevia psu's that are on the market.

A majority of online psu cals are rarely even close to accurate. The one Newegg uses is no exception.

And what's with the 380W suggestion? Do you honestly think that a 380W psu will push the hardware I mentioned??? lol

Actually yes. A high quality 380W PSU like the Antec Earthwatts could power your rig. However, I wouldn't do so since you'll probably won't have that much headroom for future upgrades.

Anyway, $50 for that BFG PSU is a good price, I guess.
