Currently have a 128GB Crucial M4. Games are currently on 1TB (shorted stroked to 400GB) 7200rpm Samsung and with 3 dead sectors (doesn't really matter, only installed games on there).

Not sure if the new drive will be a pure games drive replacing the HDD, or become the main drive yet.

So far the choices (these are in Canada, so US sales do not pertain) -

$141 Sandisk Ultra II 480GB
$150 Crucial BX100 500GB
$186 Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

Unless another choice comes up, is there a compelling reason to not choose the BX100?

I'm worried about waiting to next year because I think the "value" options may all be relegated to planar TLC drives (BX200, Samsung 750 EVO, etc.)
 
I know Samsung is on the high side now but they do have much better read performance.
Maybe wait for a day for Thanksgiving day and shop for a cheaper price?
also what are you using to monitor dead sectors?
 
In terms of waiting most of the retailers have already "leaked" their BF sales here. There's 2 more I'm waiting on, so will see. Yes these are the BF prices (account for 1.35 CAD to USD exchange).

I did an actual full scan and a full erase (write zeroes) using I want to say ES-Tool (one of the tools on UBCD, can't exactly remember, been over a year now) when I first got it (was free). Since then I've just been checking with crystaldiskinfo periodically.

It was just a factoid I threw in there. Failure for that drive would just be annoying due to loss of a drive and having to reinstall some games. The only thing on that are games and some portable generic applications (eg. HWmonitor, gpu-z, crystaldisk info etc.).

Although I'm exactly sure what to do with this drive if replaced with the SSD since I wouldn't want to resell it (due to the dead sectors).

BF is going to be worse than the actual Thanksgiving day (tomorrow) when it comes to electronics.
Well either way, good luck with getting what you want.
At the end of it, I like to think that SSD is SSD. They are all "fast" improves overall user experience.
 
If those are the prices you are looking at, buy the bx100 and dont look back. The bx100 is a fantastic drive and you will be extremely happy with it, and the extra money in your pocket.
 
I'm actually wavering a bit about getting one at all. On one hand it'd be convenient, on the other do I really need more than the 1-3 I'm really currently frequently playing on SSD (current fits 1-3).

If only I wasn't worried about planar NAND being the value drives next year which would mean 2017 before an upgrade :p

Oh I'm just using BF as a generic term for the sales around this time.

The $150 BX 500GB is actually on Thanksgiving (well not for us) Thursday from Amazon. The other two are Newegg deals which are also on now (the 10% promo code for Newegg.ca actually ends Thursday as well).

The only waiting would be Cyber Monday next week or next month on Boxing Day (day after Christmas) here.
 
And AMEX just sent me a $10 statement credit on Amazon purchase promotion e-mail... lol, a sign?

Will have to get this or headphones now.

Newegg.com and Newegg.ca run different promos.

The .ca one for Canada isn't as good. It's 10% off (up to $20) for a $100 or purchase.

As far as I know we currently don't have the Visa Checkout promo or AMEX promo.

So the EVO 500GB is actually $200 - $20 (10%) + $6 shipping = $186. Sandisk is $150 - 15$ (10%) + $6 shipping = $141.
BX100 500GB is just $150 with free shipping. Although now $10 off with the AMEX promo if I use it on that and not headphones (Sennheiser HD518s are currently $78.).

In a way the choice of SDD does not matter. When you replace a spinner with an SSD there is no way to loose. You can buy the cheapest one and it will eat the spinner for lunch.

IMO it only matters when you are upgrading one SSD with another.

I would maximise Gb/$ if I were you. The size will be felt more then the speed because any SDD is faster then the spinner.
