alright, i was all ready to pull the trigger on a P4 system:
2.8c
abit is7-e
1gb pc-3200 mushkin (2x512)

at the last second i thought it would be wise to do some research on a comparable amd system. well, 6 hours later i am stuck. keep in mind i am on a budget (who isn't) and i was happy with the p4 system coming in under $500. this is what i have come up with so far:

a64 3000
asus k8v deluxe
1gb pc-3200 mushkin (2x512)

with a hsf the amd system comes in @ about $120 more than the p4 system. is the amd system worth that increase in funds? am i going to get better longevity and performance for my money? or should i stick with the cheaper of the two?

any input (on components or otherwise) is greatly appreciated.

You'll get better performance and longevity, but how much are you spending in total? If the price difference is only something like 10% to 15%, go for the Athlon64.

this pretty much says it all.

the only components i am purchasing are the ones i mentioned, plus hsf and goop (the rest of the system would be taken from my current one). the p4 comes to about $460.00 b4 tax, and the amd comes to $560.00 b4 tax. so the difference is about 100 bucks; more than the 15% you mentioned.

i would gladly pay that $100 knowing it was going to give me more fps, and add months (if not longer) to it's life. i guess i am just slow to go for it thinking i was going to get away with an upgrade under $500.

You could certainly get more life out of the A64, mainly because of 64-bit etc etc. But in the end, it does come down to whether you are willing to pay the extra cash or not, whether the budget will be broken too much. But the A64 will get you more life, and with the gig of RAM, read: KICK ASS SYSTEM!!
