Well, after all the trouble I went through (although not nearly as much trouble as some of you who like to mod and cut up stuff to make things work...) getting watercooling in my Qpack, I really don't like it. It was a hassle and im nervous to tip the computer in any way due to the crappy job me and me friends did of installing it, and none of us feel like redoing it more securely, we were thankful we got the stupid system running.
Anyway, the watercooling system we chose is too large to fit the 550 watt power supply in the qpack as well, the power supply hits the 5.25 bay resevoir. So at the moment the power supply is sitting on top of the Qpack. You can imagine how pretty that looks.
Furthermore, the graphics card (7800gtx) is getting too hot for my liking (about 80 C under load) and even though the watercooling set we purchased came with a gpu waterblock, I really don't want to deal with that. In the meantime, I took the casing off of the Qpack and that really helps the temps. It also helps to make the machine look even more like a total mess than ever before. So now, instead of idling in the 60's it stays at 50-51 C. Never really checked the temps under load...
So, I need some reassurance in what I intend to purchase to get my power supply back in the Qpack, cool my processor just as efficiently as it is currently, and keep my 7800gtx cooler. My solutions are some Zalman parts on newegg.
The HSF I'm looking at got good reviews, its the 7000B-CU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118113). I doubt the 7700 will fit and I don't care to find out the hard way. The reviews show that it cools 3.0 ghz processors decently, but what about my p4 3.4 ghz that I intend to overclock...? I'm not certain if this HSF will efficiently cool it down. If it can't cool it down enough to overclock, I really don't care - I just want to get rid of the watercooling and replace it with effective air cooling.
My processor is not a socket 478 however, so I also need to buy that stupid adapter for my LGA 775 that is made of less than a dollar's worth of plastic (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118219). Why they charge $7 is beyond me, but I'll buy it anyway.
To cool my 7800gtx I was looking into the VF700-CU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118117). It got exceptional reviews including one other individual who used it on his 7800gtx and was pleased with the results. Since the PCI slot beneath my 7800 is not in use I don't mind the size, and I intend to put the PCI Fan I bought beneath this cooler.
Then my 550 watt psu should fit right where the original 420 watt was, I'll put a DVD burner in the 5.25 bay, put the case back on the Qpack and hopefully won't have to worry about temps or tilting my machine.
I propose my plan to you because I'm not entirely certain of this plan and need a little reassurance that this will work, or if anyone can suggest any superior alternatives to my plan of action.
