Inplace upgrade to RAID1?

I'm looking to move from a single 320GB drive to a RAID1 setup, just for the extra bit of security regarding my data (I appreciate it isn't a complete backup solution and all that). Given my files are already on the first 320GB drive, will I have to back everything up to another drive to initiate the mirror, or can it be done inplace (and I presume the first drive will just shuffle everything over)?

I'll be using the integrated controller on my GA-965G-DS3. Cheers for any help guys.
 
After having done some more reading, the only really applicable information I can find is in regards to dynamic disks (which might be a solution if I can't do this in place upgrade)... how would this compare to the integrated solution on the motherboard? My suspicion would be that the integrated would likely be more reliable (as I could change OS if required) and possibly slightly faster, but all comments are very welcome ;).
