Jail officials are investigating how an inmate of the Western Regional Jail in West Virginia managed to shoot selfies of himself and post them on Facebook.

Holbrook said he got hold of a cell phone and started snapping selfies. He posted them to Facebook and people are now wondering how he got his hands on a phone in the first place. "We were just trying to have a good time in jail. We're already here, why be miserable?" Holbrook said in an interview with Eyewitness News Reporter Jessi Starkey. "I said hi to a couple of people to let everyone know I was doing all right -- family and friends." Holbrook is keeping tight-lipped about where he found the cell phone. "It was within my reach, and I just got my hands on it," he said.

Jail should be so miserable that it knocks some sense into you.

But derp derp, almost nobody that gets sent to jail learns their lesson and will be put right back in jail soon after they are released.

But hey, why not, the tax payers are paying $40,000+ per year to take care of these scumbags to have free boarding, food, laundry service, etc.

Break the law enough and you basically get a free ride. Doesn't seem like much of a punishment now does it?

According to my brother, a prisoner, cell phones are not uncommon in prison at all.
According to one of my daughters, that works at a prison, it is a rather commonly confiscated item.

This guy probably got caught cuz he posted a selfie with his gains.

Jail isn't meant for punishment. It isn't always meant to keep society safe. It's just a way to keep collecting more taxes. 90% of the people in jail would do just fine back on the streets. The only people that should be in jail for an extended period should be really bad crimes like assault, murder, rape, child porn, etc. All of the dirt poor drug addicts, shoplifters, mental illness, are in jail so that the state and county can collect more taxes.

Damn the man!
But seriously, the punishment of prison is the time and basic freedoms you lose. The time is the punishment. No medieval torture devices or raping necessary.

It should still not be all sunshine and roses though.

"The time is the punishment." Give me a break.

So it is basically like sending a kid to their room for a set amount of time because they misbehaved.

Yeah, that is going to really make those full grown "adults" think twice about doing the same thing again.

The amount of sunshine is limited, and roses are typically omitted all together. You may think it's all fun and games, but there are plenty of people who run from the cops and risk life and limb because they'd rather die than go back to prison. Obviously something about it sucks.

I disagree whole heartedly, the really bad crimes murder, rape, child porn etc should be hung in the town square as a friday night main event. lesser crimes like assault, theft, txting and driving etc should get public flogging at the whipping post first offense and loss of pinky second offense with 90 days solitary confinement. No prison should have hot meals or hot showers, only the very basic medical treatment, no TV and no idle time. Those who are in prison for petty crimes like public drunkeness, pissing in public, trespassing etc should work a chain gang.

Somethings wrong with the system considering we lock up more of our citizens than any other country... but i feel like im gettin off topic.

More often than not, people come out better trained on a new con, instead of being reformed.

I don't know about this. If you look at the pictures of him he is in handcuffs, a belly chain and with a box over the cuffs. Having been taken to jail like that believe me you don't have much freedom to move so getting a phone from anywhere apart from the pocket on his jumpsuit would be pretty impossible. Think there must be somebody else involved. Also if he did have a cellphone it would be much more valuable to him to stay quiet and use it in jail.

You've never done anything stupid that breaks the law? You can end up in jail easier than you think. Bet you wouldn't be going on like that if you did. You do lose your freedom when you are in jail and don't get to make choices about what you do. Hot meals and hot showers aren't exactly luxuries you know

I have done plenty of stupid things and yes I did spend a night in jail fortunatly that was all because my dad told them to keep me locked up and they would come get me in the morning. I was scared to death. I am certain that I would not have done as many stupid things in my life if there had been real consequences.
