Inkscape, Illustrator, CorelDraw, etc. good for making patterns?

I am trying to decide what vector graphics software to purchase. I see my options as Illustrator, Inkscape (free), Freehand, or CorelDraw. Money is a concern.

My main task is to create patterns.

My question is, what piece of mentioned (or different) software would best suit me in this purpose? I am specifically looking for what utility best handles situations involved in pattern making. For example, one primary issue I'm thinking about is large patterns. I want to be able to print my patterns on standard letter size printing paper. This involves drawing a pattern across multiple pages, but allowing for easy "assembly" after printing. I would really like it if software had margins and even "tape" lines for easy assembly upon printing. Which of these would be the best suited for handling such situations, while maintaining actual size printing scale for easy pattern duplication and assembly. I know all could work, but what would work easiest? Any ideas, links, or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
