Hello,

I just wanted to share an e-mail from AMD regarding the problems with ATI cards GSOD and vertical-line-GSOD and GSOD me here and GSOD me there. GSOD EVERYWHERE! Sigh.

The background story:

I just bought Club3D 5970 and have experienced GSOD and vertical line hangups while playing common, new games like Bioshock 2, Dirt 2, BC2, etc. It's really frustrating and I don't know what to do. Should I wait or deliver it back for a new one? Well, AMD certainly couldn't help me out regarding this question (which is quite fair).

My setup:

Asus P6T
Corsair Dominator DHX+ 7-7-7-20, 6 GB
Samsung Syncmaster P2770 monitor
Corsair modular 850w
i7 920
Win 7 64

Here's the reply from AMD:

AMD Engineering is working on a fix for the Grey Screen of Death as end users are calling it. Unfortunately we cannot confirm if it will be fixed in 10.3 or a later release, we do not get the information any earlier than an end user does on what is fixed in the drivers.
From your specifications and set up description your system should be fine for running the card you have, you more than meet the requirements and have updated BIOS, chipset and hardware drivers installed on a clean install of Windows.
The issue may be the video card though, there just is no way to tell until there is an official driver release referring to a fix for the GSOD. HD58XX series cards where identified with the issue and 10.2 drivers where to fix this issue in this specific series, a fix for the HD5K series is what is being worked on now and this will include your HD5970. If you have not checked with the specific partner producer of your card please do so. See if they have a BIOS update for the card or can possibly confirm a fix in 10.3, the partner producers do have a higher level of support than end users and may have more details on the fix and its release date.

What would you have done? Deliver it back or wait?

By the way. I'm noticed a very strange problem regarding the lockups in Windows. It seems like when I have Windows Aero enabled, i always get a gray screen lockup for 10 seconds in Windows. It looks like I have to reboot, but after a while Windows comes back and tell me that the display driver stopped responding and the problem was corrected. As soon as I turn of Aero, everything seems OK again. Of course, this could be a coincidence, but I've researched this issue 20 times and it never seem to fail. Isn't this strange? On the other side, it helps me address the problem towards a driver problem after all. But it's not perfectly sta:confused:ble in games, yet, so this is what keeping my mind busy regarding RMA.

One more question. When system settings in Windows, it says my video card has only 1 GB ram and is 5900 series. Is this right? I thought it was 2 GB? Unigine Heaven tells me the same.

Well, however, just some information from my side as well as some questions. Just hoping for some tips and hints. Getting a bit worried here. 5970 isn't exactly a cheap toy :)

Your card does have 2gb ram on it, but it's a two-GPU card in which each GPU has 1gb available to it. As such, you effectively just have 1gb vram.

Kind of hard to say if you should RMA. To me it seems so many people are experiencing this issue that I'd say it is unlikely to be a hardware issue. Also some users have reported it fixed by drivers. On the other hand, other users have reported it fixed after RMA'ing their card.

You could try disabling the card's internal crossfire to see if that makes a temporary fix( this will force it to use only 1 gpu ).

At any rate, there's not enough information available regarding the problem to really make an informed decision. Wait for more information, or RMA and hope you'll be more lucky with your next card.
 
the card has 2gb frame buffer 1GB x 2(or 1 GB per GPU) so it would probably show up only once =p same as it should show up as 1600 shaders x 2 rather than 3200 shaders
 
PM Kyle. He said AMD needs the problem cards turned in to have a chance at a quick fix.
 
I have a Sapphire 5970 and i have only experianced this issue once, I updated to newest drivers and not had the issue again. :/
