Whats the diff. between a 5200 core and a 5700 core, looking to get a PCI card for a second computer (non-gaming) I have in my house and was curious.

Yeah there is a few different first of all the 5200 only has 64bits while the 5700 is 128bits and the core speed on the 5700 is 150 mhz faster then the 5200. i suggest you get the 5700.

well yhou can't say teh 5200 has a 64bit bus just like that...some has 128bit too ya know....and since this is not for gaming...I would definitely get the cheaper one.
 
You've got to be very careful when it comes to the 64 bit versus 128 bit memory width on those older video boards. I've looked very carefully for 128 bit PCI video boards and I've constantly run into boards labeled as 128 bits when they were actually 64 bits. In every single case where I could verify the actual memory width for a PCI board: if the board had four RAM chips, then it was 64 bits; if the board had eight RAM chips, then it was 128 bits. There may be an exception to that rule but I couldn't find any. The main reason even large websites (cough... newegg... cough...) were so inaccurate about the RAM width was because there were two models of most of the boards. The 128MB version had four RAM chips and was 64 bits wide. The 256MB version had eight RAM chips and was 128 bits wide. And looking at the way the circuit boards are laid out (I used to design hardware), it would make sense that they wouldn't connect two separate RAMs to the same data lines on the GPU. It looks like the 128MB model attaches four 16 bit wide DDR SDRAMs to the lower 64 bits on the GPU and the 256MB model attaches eight to all 128 bits on the GPU. But the websites often list the board as 128 bits even for the 128MB version with four RAM chips.
 
yeah thats what I'm looking for too is a PCi board, ITs a 256 version. I think it has 4 on top and 4 on bottom. I believe thats the way BFG did that card. So that would make it a 128 bit, right?
 
This certainly looks like a 128 bit board. Newegg shows both the top and the bottom and it has eight chips so it should be a 128 bitter. It's just kinda frustrating though. I looked around trying to find a FX 5700LE which is definitely 128 bits and I couldn't find one at a reasonable price. The advantage of a 5700 core over a 5200 is that the 5700 has a reasonable implementation of DirectX9 pixel and vertex shaders whereas a 5200 has an extremely limited implementation. In practice, a 5200 is really a DirectX8 board because its DirectX9 support is so slow. The annoying thing is that there doesn't seem to be much price difference between 5700LEs and 5200s with the same sort of video RAM. The problem is that you just can't find PCI 5700LEs which are 128 bits anymore.
 
depends if you have the money, if you do have the money to get the 5700 get it, because it will be better in the long run.
 
Thank you all for the help, I went ahead and picked up the BFG 5200 256MB, (shhhh i got it for $70), I couldnt pass it up for the price. Its running great. My G/F uses my second pc more than I do and she could tell a big difference in the colors from the onboard stuff. I'm running a 6800Gt in my main box. :)
