in vista there's the indexing feature which allows real quick searching to happen (this is what I believe many vista users turn off, but i left it on):

index1.jpg

this is typically accessed from control panel

and you can specify this folders you want to be indexed.

but then if i right click a folder that's not in that list, go properties, and go advanced i see

index2.jpg

what is this other index service?

Hrm, this looks like a holdover from Windows XP and 2000, which had an Indexing Service which would index the entire drive - this took an inordinately long time and no-one used it. Vista's only indexes a few locations and is much more reasonable (and should quieten down after initial indexing). That attribute was used to exclude folders from the old Indexing Service.

So, possibilities:
1. It doesn't do anything with the new Indexing Service.
2. The Indexing Service only tries to index requested folders, but you can make explicit exclusions using that option.

I wonder which it is..

i wonder what it is too... maybe it's the basic indexing service... but i have no clue
