Independent Clock Generators

Noticed on the front page the blurb about the abit-fatality board having been outfitted with independent clock gens -

Why was'nt this done years ago, thought I read an article outlining some technical difficulties going that route? Anyone have more info on the subject?

I think it has to do with the dificulty of exchanging data between the buses if they aren't in a predetermined ratio.
