increasing speed... curious about everyone else..

I'm sorry if this is a repost... I searched and trolled through a few pages and didn't really find anything to what I'm looking for.

I basically have 3 machines folding for me at work (no worries, they are all either mine or old machines I fixed up to fold).

Main folder is a P4 3.0 GHz WinXP, 1gb RAM
Secondary machine is Celeron 1 Ghz WinSer 2000 512 RAM
Third folder is a P3, 500MHz Win2k 512 MB RAM

The main folder is folding about 1 WU a day or so and the other 2 are folding about 1 WU every 2-4 days.

The main folder is running FAH 6.02 and the 2 older units are running 5.03 I beleive.

My main question is how can I really speed up my PPD and WU throughput?!? I see other people doing 1,000's of PPD and I'm maybe getting 50 or so if that...

I realize that some people are farming and have quite a few machines folding, but I figured my main folder running at 3.0 GHz should be able to fold a few WU's every day (depending on deadliness).

Note: All 3 machines are currently running at 100% for CPU cycles).

Any 'boost' help or tips would be greatly appreciated and I apologize if this is a repeat post that I missed somewhere in the sub forum.

All your machines are simply too slow. there are quite a few people here running 3 or 4 Q6600s or similar 24/7 on all 4 cores. A single Core2 core pulls far more than all three of your current boxes combined.
 
slow and steady i guess is the course.

My main folder is only a P4, but has hyperthreading enabled, so even though it's running at 100%, I see 2 windows in the task manager and they are showing both are running at 50%.... any way to speed that up?

No... this is normal. You are giving it your best... not much else you can do with this project. From what I have been told, the WCG project can make good use of older hardware such as yours.

If you can put a GPU into the P4 rig you can seem a big jump in PPD.

Even a 9600GSO will give you ~2k ppd and can be had for $60

 
i just finished a WU so I finally topped the 200 WU's.... lol.

waiting for the next update to sweep me and give me the milestone!

I have a grandmother with Alzheimers as well and I hope this is in any way, a step for me to help her. We hate to see her slipping away month by month....

Never meant to scare anyone off or seem ungrateful. He asked why his PPD seemed low, I explained that the systems in question were the limiting factor. Could've been nicer about it, I grant you.
 
One thing you can do is run two instances of the uniprocessor client on your P4, since it supports Hyperthreading (you can run one instance on each virtual core). Just set different MachineID numbers for each client when you're configuring them. That should give you maybe 100-150PPD on that box.
 
Isnt it also possible to run SMP on the HT P4? It would have to be a dedicated folder as im sure the deadlines would be very close but it might be worth a try.

I have tried but deadlines are almost impossable to meet. Best I could do on my P4 HT was a unicore and a GPU2. That seemed to yield the best ppd for me.
 
A p4 with HT running Linux with the OC set to ludicrous speed maybe.

Yep, you're right. I didn't think of that, I was just thinking about Linux getting a bit better performance.
 
My P4 box at work has received 250,000 WCG points since May. Gets credit for 1 - 4 results per day. Not bad for an old box.

I have a similar box as you.. P4 3.2ghz.. I'm running vista basic on it and its got 2.5 gigs of ram.. I'm getting around 385ppd out of that box. I'm only running one instance of the uniprocessor client on it. I might try another one since that might work.

I also have another box (my WHS box) that's a 3.2ghz P4 with 2 gigs of ram running the uniproccesor client and I'm only getting 129ppd on that one.. not sure why the difference between the two similar boxes.

My vista P4 box has a pcie slot so I just got a 8600 from lassiter for that one so that should help out more.

If you can afford a cheap gpu client for any of the machines I think that's where the ppd/$ is right now. I wish my WHS box had a pcie slot becuase that'd surely have one too.

thanks for all the input guys.

I've got a newer server running dual quad cores with 8GB of RAM running SQL server and TS Server... but I'm afraid to really mess with that machine. That server maybe gets pushed to 5% use on a good day....*sigh*.

If I get my new XPS laptop for xmas I will defintely get more ppd! lol
 
You could grab some serious ppd out of that machine. 4 smp instances would give you quite the boost. Especially in linux. Maybe even 8-9k ppd

yeah, i wish i could really get it on there, but it is a company owned device that's running medical software... if i messed up the server while installing.... I'd be dead... oh... and fired! :eek:
 
Ah, yeah its definitely not worth it if its not a computer you own. Even if people have permission its still a flaky situation sometimes.
