Hey guys, just bought a computer from a friend, and wanted to upgrade the HD to 320 gigs so i went and got myself a WD 320 gig sata 2 drive. I plugged it in, and it seems to be working ok, but windows (XP, SP1) only detects it as a 131 gig drive. Anyone ever run into such a problem? I searched the net for info but couldn't find any concrete solution to my problem.

The mobo is a Gigabyte 8S655FX if that helps..

make sure it's formatted as an NTFS drive, and install SP2. Download WD data life plus tools, and run it. You should get a popup asking to install full LBA48 support. Click yes and restart.
That's about the easiest way to do it.

SP1 has a 131gig limit. Once you install Sp2 you'll be able to use the rest of it.

Thanks for the help guys. :) Btw just checked the size of my drive, and it actually sais 137 not 131, so I googled that and found a bit more info.

Just partition it into 2 parts instead.

But I can't unless I solve the problem of XP just detecting 137 gigs. I can split that into two, but it'll still add up to 137.

Odd... I have a 200GB HDD in my XP SP1 system... go figure.

Ha!

I just had the same exact issue about an hour ago. What timing this thread has.

Service Pack 1 should already fix the issue with 48-bit LBA. Try opening disk management, diskmgmt.msc, and see if you can see the rest of the hard drive's unpartitioned space.

heh, the IT boy in me knew SP1 was enough... just didnt have the time to verify his thoughts lurking in the back of my mind... sorry, been busy at work lately.
