inaccessable files on new partition

I recently had the same problem with 2 new drives. One was a 250 Gig Hitachi
SATA drive & the other was a Seagate 160 Gig PATA drive. Both were new bare
drives. I installed them in 2 recent computers (An Athlon 64 and a socket 775
Intel P4). I was using a slipstreamed WinXP Pro with Service Pack 2 disk.
When the Windows installer asked me to create a partition I created a 50 Gig
primary partition on the Hitachi and a 90 Gig primary on the Seagate. I left
the remaining capacity unformatted. Windows installed fine and after
everything was done I went into Windows Management on both machines and created
a second partition on each drives using the remaining space. Both partitions
used the letter D. I'm not sure if my problem was choosing the quick format
for the NTFS file system although both D partitions formatted and showed up in
explorer fine.

My problem surfaced later. I could copy fires and videos to the D partitions
using Explorer and was able to access them and move or delete them. But any
files that the computer put on those partitions were inaccessable. I made a
backup using Driveimage 2002 and put it on the D partition. It showed up fine
but when I try to access, move or delete it, it says to check and see if the
disk is full or protected. The same with files placed in my temp folder by
emule. The files in the temp folder I copied manually can be accessed, moved
or deleted fine. But files downloaded by the computer show the same error. The
C partitions were OK.

I used Partition Magic 8 to delete the D partition on the Hitachi, recreate it
and format it the regular slow way but when I created another backup it was
inaccessable again. I finally wiped the Hitachi and reinstalled Windows using
the entire drive in one partition but I haven't done the Seagate yet. I've
checked permissions, gone into safe mode and even checked attributes but
everything seems OK. Anybody else run into this problem? I'm sure it's
something stupid that's obvious to everybody else.
