I just put together my new rig with a HIS ATI x800xl. I got the newest drivers off of ATI's website(catalyst 5.8). The only game i've loaded up so far is WOW and when i play that about every 10mins my screen will go black like the monitor and VC arent connected to each other then it will come back. An ATI error message will pop up and ask me if I want to send the error report to ATI. After awhile of playing the terrain will start messing up and have metal looking plates in it. There are a couple of other weird things it starts to do. Does anyone have any tips on how to correct this? I've tried the digital input as well as the analog input on the monitor and it has the same errors on either of them.

Your screen goes black because of the VPU recover thing that ATi puts in their drivers. It's supposed to reset the GPU without having to reset the entire computer so that even if your video card locks, you can still keep doing what you're doing with minimal downtime.
At least, that's the official word from the spin doctors.
In reality, the VPU recover function causes more problems than it's worth, especially if you use AGP and fast-writes (aaahh..the stories I could tell....), so go into the driver control panel and TURN THE MUNTED THING OFF.
Hopefully, this fixes your problem. It fixed mine when I had that problem.

Yeah thats exactley what it is, i'll try to turn it off and see if it does anything. Why does it say AGP anyways? I'm using PCI-E.

No, don't worry about that, I was just mentioning that VPU recover and AGP fast writes are a huge problem, for some unknown reason. I figured you were using PCI-E if you've just built yourself a new system.

After i turned that recover system off it fixed the problem of the monitor disconnecting but the VC still seems to be having problems. It'll do weird stuff in games like lock up or turn the whole screen boxy etc.

AMD venice 3200+, Crucial 1gig, epox ultra mobo....

Anyways i pulled the side off the case to watch the video card while it's running. The fan never turned on... So I'm going to call HIS or ATI when i get the chance (work during their hours). I figure it's probably just overheating because the cooler isnt turning on. Does this indicate that i'm going to have to RMA this card or could i possibly not set it up right? I didnt see any plugs for the fan. Heres a link to the card i have.(wasnt that much when i bought it, haha)

Well, that's likely to be your problem. Heat's a killer....:p
RMA that beast, if it's the stock fan, you've dont nothing wrong, it's just died. It happens.

Yeah I bought it becuase it comes with that artic cooler and that is supposed to be a great fan. I think i'm probably going to have to RMA it and that will suck. This is my first build and i've allready RMA'd the heatsink/fan from AMD because it wouldnt fit on my board.

I just emailed superpcmart.com to get myself an RMA #. I actually ordered the card on 7/25/2005. So i hope there arent any problems because it was almost a month ago. This sucks i'm really worried and upset about this.

Meh, dont be. RMA is just applying for your warranty. Don't keep using the card though. Try and ship it back in moderately good condition...:p

They just sent me the RMA #. I honestly cant think of anything else that could be wrong with the card so they said that once they get the card then test it and it turns out there is something wrong they're going to send me a new card. I might try to see if they can cross ship one somehow.

I'm having the same problem in BF2 with my X850XT ...thanks m8 I'll try it
:)

Dude. The fan has STOPPED. It's sure not a problem with your power supply if that's happening. RMA it, and sit back and wait for the apologies (or the new card, at least :p)
