If the Areca has software that can email you in the event of an array failure, then be sure to set that up, and if you can get it to send an SMS, do that too. Sucks that you lost that much data, but as the old saying goes, "experience teaches wisdom". Consider this a lesson.

Personally, seeing a drive on the array have no activity lights for eight whole months would have tipped me off that something can't be right, though...

no hotswap.. in coolermaster 4in3 bays.. all hdd activity is in 1 led..

Seems a worthless controller to me. I know 3ware cards would pause at POST if it detected something wrong. I believe it even made you press a key to continue to boot.

On Areca controllers, if you have "Auto Activate Incomplete RAID" Disabled (which is the default), then if you reboot and one (or more) of the drives from the array is not functioning, then the controller will not activate the RAID set automatically. So it should then be obvious that something is wrong.
