Improvised drive mounting? (Antec/Chieftec chassis)

I bought this case last week for a file server.

It may need to support more than 10 drives though.

The motherboard (an intel 815 based system) IDE will have the OS drive, a DVD-ROM.

the RAID 5 card will have 8 drives (although maybe not at the beginning, depending on if I go for 80s or something larger).

I would -like- support for a removeable drive.

To do this, I'd set it up as Secondary Slave (the DVD will be master.

The OS drive I would like to mount vertically against the mobo mounting area behind the drives. (see here by the fan opening.

is there enough room to clear switches, the drive trays, etc?

Yes, I have the older Chieftec Dragon cace (same thing really) and there is plenty of room behind the removable drive cages for a drive flat against the motherboard tray

Just make sure you keep the circuit board of the drive off of the bare metal MOBO tray or you will have some issues :p

We have 6 HD's in a similar case at work. A RAID 5 w/ 4 80GB drives for storage, and a RAID 1 w/ 2 40GB drives for OS. The flat cables definatly fit behind the cage, makes it look much cleaner then when we were using the stock ribon cables that came with the RAID card  Definately go rounded, when you've got that many cables in one machine, it's the only way to go ;)

I'll be using rubber standoffs to prevent the PCB from touching.

I doubt I'll have round cables though...probably fold the flats though...

I would suggest this item from Newegg ($132 isn't too bad for what you're getting -although it isn't in stock right now) to take up the first three full-size bays and then reserve the remaining drive for a CD/DVD drive or something. That would give you 5 additional spaces on top of the 6 internal ones. Now if you still mount the drive against the mobo tray, you'll have a total potential of 12 drives in that case. You can see the implementation of the above mentioned 5-drive chassis in this Supermicro case here (I think it's over $700 for this case though)
