I just upgraded my main box from an Athlon 2600+ to a P4 630 last night. Got a new ASRock 775Dual mobo (PCI-X and AGP on the same mobo is awesome, btw) and the system runs like a dream. No hiccups at all on 1080i Quicktime 7 video (my Athlon could barely handle 480i QT7 without slowing to a grinding halt). Everything is way faster now. I've been able to switch to 1280x960 for gaming resolution (up from 1152x864) and could probably pump it higer. I haven't tried out any 64-bit stuff yet, so I can't comment on it. My only concern is that it's running a bit hot (~50C Idle and I got it up to 68C under Prime testing overnight) but it seems to be ok, and it hasn't throttled itself at all yet. Also, LGA775 slots suck. I'm having trouble thinking of a worse way they could have picked for heatsink installation.

I didn't find the cpu install all that difficult. On the other hand I don't trust the hsf. It just looks like it is going to fall off.

If you are installing WinXP 64 bit, let me know how it turns out. I couldn't get the beta to install. I would get to a point and it would crash. Linux on the otherhand installs just fine.

Do you notice any sluggish hard drive performance? I think I got a crappy hard drive, but it takes forever to decide to start loading windows.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

But I agree, after it gets booted the thing runs like a champ, haven't found anything thus far that slows it down.

68C is extremely hot by enthusiast users, but not for average joes and manufacturers... Your CPU is generally rated to 80C so you have some good space there...

Just try not to let it get too hot.

Change your boot sequence to HDD first and see if that fixes it.

HD is set to 1st. but when the Windows "loading" screen comes up, the hd takes forever to start up.
