Need a little help here. I am putting together a computer for a friend of mine. He bought all the parts from newegg:

XP 3200+
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Radeon 9800pro
1024mb Generic ram (2x512 sticks)
80gb WD 7200rpm HD
Thermalright slk800 HSF
Liteon 52x CD burner
Case w/ 400w PS

I get it all together and it comes on fine but it runs REALLY slow. Like when I hit Delete to go into the BIOS it takes at least 1 minute to get there. It detects the IDE drives slow and will eventually get to "NO BOOTDISK FOUND" but takes about 5 - 6 minutes. Will not load windows.

After troubleshooting and coming up empty I decide to start replacing his parts with mine one by one until I found the problem. (system in sig. I have pretty much the same system as him) I have replaced EVERYTHING with mine. Processor, hard drive, power supply, ram, video card, IDE cables, (with and without CD-Rom and Floppy connected), Even the HSF! and it still has this problem. So I decide it must be the Motherboard. I put all his parts in my motherboard (in his case) and it does the same thing! I then decide maybe it's grounding out or doing something weird because of his case, so I get and antistatic bag, take the mobo out and set it on the bag, fire it up and same problem.

I'm now worried that maybe his motherboard fried something of mine. So I put my computer back together and it boots like a champ. Now, I have built many computers and NONE have been this much of a pain in the ass. Can someone PLEASE tell me what I'm missing here? Thanks for any advice.

I suggest that you clear the CMOS / BIOS, then remove any HD, floppy & CD/DVD cables, unplug the mouse and any USB devices. make sure you have a known good corded PS2 keyboard installed. unplug any ethernet devices. if there is a soundcard installed, remove it. In fact remove all PCI cards altogether.

The only things you should have are: mobo, cpu with heat sink & fan, video card, RAM.

You can disconnect all the front panel cables but the on/off cable. remove any cables going to USB ports.

If it still does the same thing, are the RAM sticks in the right place? How many of them are there? Are they single sided or doubled sided? What does the mobo recommend?

what heat sink compound did you use? is it applied correctly?

plug in the power cord and turn it on. what happens?
 
Audio and lan is onboard so there are no PCI cards. I have tried only processor, ram (1 stick of 512 double sided Also tried 1 stick of 256 double sided) video card, HD, and only the power button cable hooked up. With a ps2 keyboard with and without my USB mouse. Will try with no HD next (already tried with my HD and IDE cable that I know works). Everything I am trying with came from my computer which is exactly the same as his and I know it all works because I'm typing to you from it. Thanks for the suggestions, any more?

Have you tried without the HD connected yet?

if so same problem? You have to narrow it down to the harddrive or remaining system.
