Image quality the same for different media players?

When playing videos on my pc, do all the different media players(VLC, WMP, etc) output the same image quality? Do some look better than others?

Any difference in PQ would arise from a difference in codecs being used and/or the video control settings used. I use WMP11 for DVD playback because it uses the Purvideo DVD decoder that I installed; however, I find the PQ slightly better (on some occasions) when using the VLC player for certain downloaded Xvid and Dvix files.

I have an 8800GTS and it says it has Purevideo, how do I enable it? Do I need to download anything to use it?
