Image quality between cards

Is there a difference in image quality in games between cards in a product line? Meaning all cards within the Nvidia 500 (or Radeon 6000) series put out the same image quality. I know there would be a huge difference in FPS/playability, but if you loaded up a game with none of the extras (MSAA, AF, etc) would there be any discernable difference imagewise? On that same note is there a difference in image quality between different series, meaning would a Nvidia 500 (or Radeon 6000) series look that much better than something from the 400 (5000) series with all settings being equal?

Was just gaming and admiring the beauty of one of the maps I was in, that question popped in my head

The biggest difference would be on anisotropic filtering modes, since both companies have different algorithms. other than that, the image quality has been pretty much the same, with just performance increments.

You'd be hard-pressed to find any difference in anisotropic filtering quality between NVIDIA and AMD cards in real-world scenarios. In extreme test samples, there can be visible differences, but these test samples are deliberately designed to reveal flaws in filtering quality. In the real world, these differences are almost universally undetectable.

The OP is asking if there is a difference within a product line from NV (or AMD).

The answer is no.

i can tell the difference every time when i swap nvidia and amd cards.

different color tone, lighting, shadow, and the way the engine runs in motion.

Yeap i saw that, i was thinking that the 6000's had different algorithms between the VLIW4 and 5, but it seems that i was wrong, looking back at anandtech even the VLIW5 6800's had already the newer algorithm, soooo, yeah, with no extras then the IQ is exactly the same, as the only difference on the 6000's line would be extra AA modes on the 6900's.

EDIT TO CORRECT:

Well actually, then re-reading, yeah the 6000's have a slightly better AF algorithm. Although honestly, the difference between the 5000's and 6000's is present on very specific texturing situations like those of Trackmania. And anisotropic filtering isn't something that i would consider an extra on cards of these series, as even the low end models can turn it on while not even batting an eyelash ;)
