Image differences going from ATI to nVidia

Hello, hopefully I chose the right subforum...

A long time ago, I had a 9800gt, and it was a good card until the fan couldn't keep up. But one thing that bothered me was that the dark colors in games seemed pretty dark. I could adjust the non gaming applications to higher brightness but in gaming it would stay the same.

So after the card died, I picked up an ATI 4850 from a fellow board member here. Without tweaking any settings, I immediately noticed that the same dark areas in video games were quite brighter.

I'm back now with an nVidia 750 ti, and I've played with some of the gamma and brightness, and I'm back with the same issues I had with the 9800gt. In gaming the dark corners and areas are pretty dark.

Is this normal? Or is there a setting I'm missing?
 
I've never experienced that issue.
The last time I swapped cards was a GTX285 to an HD580, and recently I swapped computers but kept the same monitor, HD6950 computer to a GTX980 computer.
 
there was an old article in maximumpc where they tested 2 diff pc's same case but diff video cards so ppl didnt know which was which and they chose the amd\ati graphics with the pics and other things shown due to the vibrant and more colorful looking pics, images etc.. i to noticed the diff going from nvidia to ati\amd. I think nvidia in my opinion does this on purpose to render games faster with less draw to the screen for processing. i saw things by default in Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001) game in the sky and on ground that werent there before or hidden by nvidia. In fact turning the gamma up made it worse on nvidia.
 
Personally, I find AMD to have better looking picture quality in some games (like HL2), but I go with Nvidia mostly for performance.
 
Nvidia uses a short color range than AMD or something like that. Sorry cant remember exactly what it was but something like the RBG starting at 20-22 or something.

What he said. We had that issue at work. When IT decided to swap our cards to render.
And colors were all wacked out because both cards render using a different pool.
 
i used a 4890 for a week while waiting on my 970. there is no difference.
 
I most certainly saw a difference when I went from 8600gt to 4670 many years ago. Right when I got to the desktop I could see that it had more pop for lack of a better word. It was certainly not all in my mind as I was not expecting nor looking for any differences like that.
 
Some displays tend to use wrong black levels on Nvidia. That should be fixed now but at least there is a setting for it now if it gets it wrong automatically.
Well aren't you just a god. I bet you can discern flac from 320mbps mp3 in the blink of an eye also ;)
With right track and decent enough equipment the difference can be quite obvious.
 
I'd have to agree that ATI has better image quality. Found that out by mistake.

About 7 months ago I went to a local computer store looking around for old parts, weird stuff, anything esoteric I could use or hack up. While there I noticed a gaming machine with a Gigabyte 970a-ud3, an fx-8120, water cooled, with a nice Corsair SSD, a spinner, AMD 7950, decent custom case, and 8 gigs of ram. The guy running the store didn't really know what he had, and I walked out of the store with the box for a couple hundred dollars.

Anyway, I used that machine next to two other computers based on nVidia GTX 770s- all three machines had identical monitors and were carefully calibrated.

The AMD card always beat out the others in image quality. Not kidding. And I had no preconceptions because I've been an nVidia user since dumping Voodoo cards for a GForce 256.

It's not enough to make me move to AMD for GPU though. I think nVidia has the better software.

I noticed a difference when I moved from my 8800GT to a 4890 from AMD. I was amazed that I was seeing things on screen that I could never see with my Nvidia card. Even basic benchmarks looked more detailed because of how everything popped on screen.
 
ok good, I'm glad I'm not alone. I have increased the brightness settings in game and in the nvidia control panel and it has made some difference, but I do think the ATI had a better image quality.

And I'm not a fanboy of either, I buy whatever is inexpensive at the time, has good reviews and works in my systems.
 
You guys are all having a placebo effect. There has been a lot of studies done that show that at stock driver settings, the colors from one brand exactly match the colors on another. There was even one on this forum using a display calibration tool.

It was most certainly not placebo for me as again I had no reason to even think it would even look any different. When I fired up the PC with the ATI card it was immediately apparent that there was a slight visual difference though. Again I was not looking for that or even expecting it in the least bit.

I can't really add much more, the evidence demonstrating there isn't any difference in what's being sent to the monitor is recorded in the previously linked thread. This topic seems to pop up like clock work at least once a year.

And I can only tell you what I saw with my own eyes back then. AGAIN I was not expecting ANY differences nor was I looking for any. It was clearly different looking on the desktop and seemed more vivid than what I had been looking at for years. What the actual differences were I do not know but the desktop was different looking on the 4670 compared to the 8600gt and that is a FACT.
 
That's not fact, that's anecdotal.
Its a FACT that it looked different to ME. :rolleyes:

It may have only been brighter or something else but it was more vibrant looking with the 4670 over the 8600 gt. If you don't accept that then that's your damn problem.
 
I would say there is a difference, but mostly if you turn on all the smoothing options and psychics. For example, WOT tanks that travel at fast speeds have a blurry effect with my 970, 290 card didnt do that. Edges of objects look better with a 970 vs the 290, but again that depends on options enabled.
 
Also its not visible in reg text. It is most noticeable in programs that use GPU rendering.
 
I find that people start squawking about 'better colors' I find that they say stuff like this "My X card from 3-5 years ago looks completely difeferent than X card from a week ago' when the difference is simply using a VGA plug instead of DVI.

In this case, I've used dozens of cards from either company and the only time I ever noticed a diff was between analog and digital plugs.

First let me say all of this information was the result of me searching online after noticing horrible black levels on my brand new monitor and GTX 980 card, and finding an excellent post on the GeForce forums by user BatJoe. The semi-tldr; If you're display supports Full RGB, which most do, you may notice you aren't getting the right colors and the blacks don't seem so black and the whites don't seem so white. This is because despite under Display->Adjust Desktop Color Settings your digital color format being set at RGB, its actually by default set at Limited RGB, not Full. Its not as simple as that if you calibrate your monitor.

With AMD you can calibrate your monitor and it will keep those settings in all instances. With NVIDIA it will keep those settings until you go into a game and then all hell breaks lose. NVIDIA just ignores your expensive monitor and calibration equipment and displays what it wants.
 
Are you using a digital (LCD, SED) or analog display (CRT, laser projector)?
