I'm about to attempt a pretty drastic mod. Tomorrow I pick up an iMac, on the old G3 ones with the CRT monitor built into it. My plan is to completely gut the mac and then install an LCD monitor and then install the hardware in my sig into the iMac (minus the SG05 case).

I've already looked up several iMac disassembly guides and watched a few vids on it too. I think if I can get the LCD mounted the rest should be pretty easy.

It's one of the green see-through iMac's so I'll be adding some LED fans and cold cathode lights to it.

Anyone attempted this before? Anyone know for a fact it's impossible? Anything else I should know?

I'll post updates and pics of the project here as I do them.
 
Yup, I have seem at least one mod on the iMac G3 using similar method, sorry can't remember the link :p
 
If you could get a tray loading drive in the exact spot the real one has a cd/dvd drive, that would be nice.

Also... I'd try to preserve the side ports.
 
I got the iMac in on Saturday ($20 off craigslist). The LCD monitor I had picked out for it will not fit.. surfin CL now for a 15" LCD.

I think I can keep the DVD-rom in the same spot. It just uses a slim DVD-rom which I already have.

I want to preserve the side ports, but that's still up in the air currently.

I'll post pics after I start the tear down.
